I've had a very comfortable middle class life without big adversity and don't have any crazy stories to talk about. One idea I came up with is writing about how I used to be a terrible writer and how I improved. Does this sound stupid and privileged?

That may come off as trying to bs your way through unless you are esl. Have you never almost failed a class? Overcame a bully? Anything like that that someone can look at and see that they overcame a huge hurtle?

Bad idea. If I were an adcom I'd read about people's difficult lives and then come across your essay saying "writing is tough"

Think harder - and don't use grades or academia as times you've failed.

The best part is the word missing from the title of this thread.
