Does anyone have experience or advice about the best way to approach the situation of trying to get into the same med school as a significant other? Specifically, I have been accepted at a school that my girlfriend is going to interview at soon. Is there anything I could do or she could do to improve her chances of also being accepted as far as explaining our situation to someone at the school? Does that kind of thing work in med school admissions?

i heard that schools are sympathetic to these things but you probably have to be engaged or married for consideration.

I'm not even sure that an engagement would necessarilly suffice in all cases. Med school is a huge relationship breaker, so unless you have taken a much more permanent step (marriage, children), I wouldn't think they'd be interested. Otherwise some of us "girl in every port" types would have worked it into a lot more acceptances. 😀

break up with her now before its too late

I know that schools are sympathetic if your SO is already attending the school. They probably want some sort of attachment like engagement or marriage to consider this though. I think Drexel took into consideration the fact that my husband is a student, and I know of people who have gotten into other schools where their spouse attends. As far as getting in at the same time, and without significant "proof" of the attachment in the form of engagement or marriage (or long-term SO status for same-sex couples), it might be much more difficult. What can't hurt is getting in touch with the admissions director or dean and simply asking your question, humbly (don't expect special treatment, just present the situation).

Good luck.

Thanks for the idea Tigress. Has anyone done this before or perhaps have adcom experience to know how these things are looked at. I know it sounds kind of trivial to say "girlfriend" because it's not that big of a deal to them, but the med school situation is essentially the reason we haven't gotten engaged because we both know we might not end up together. So I'm not sure if there is a way to approach it so that they won't just laugh me off.

I'm in a similar situation right now- but we're engaged so it probably is a little bigger deal to med schools. We've mentioned it to every school one (or both)of us has interviewed at but I don't know how much they've taken it into account.

PM me if you want more specifics on what I've told adcoms, etc...

Good luck!
