1) It's not the end of the world

2) Assess why you didn't match. Could your rank list have been longer? Could you have interviewed at more safety programs? Was all your paperwork in on time?

3) Consider deferring internship and reapplying next year (see below), especially if something from #2 can be modified.

4) If you do scramble, assemble a faxable hard copy packet of anything a residency could possibly want - ERAS application, transcript, CV, USMLE scores, ref letters, etc.

5) You need an office from which to run your scramble. You need one phone line (the more the better), a fax with a dedicated line and an assistant (someone to run the fax, etc.)

6) Returning to #3, consider taking a year off. I've explained why I think this is a good idea here and here .

7) Again, it's not the end of the world. Do something fun tonight.

congrats to all who matched.

im going to be helping out my buddy tomorrow (was not able to match into ent). he's going to try to get a prelim spot then try for a categorical g surg spot if one opens up down the line then go for plastics. anyone have any advice on this? should he try to go now to the 'best name' school if they have prelim spots open or should he stay at our home school or should he do a year of ent research somewhere? how well do these prelims do if they want a categorical spot--i imagine well, if theres a 20-25% attrition overall on average?

any comments would be helpful.

1st question: Does he really want to do ENT? If so, does he have any modifiable problems with his application this year. If yes and yes, he should do a year of ENT research and reapply.

If ENT is not a reasonable possibility, then I would STRONGLY recommend a year of research. More than most applicants, this plan could benefit him. I assume this guy has decent stats if he tried ENT. In that case, he should have very good chances to match a strong categorical spot next year. The alternative is a tough prelim year with a lot of uncertainty about his future and a decent likelihood of having to accept an program that is personall or professionally undesirable.

Also helping out with scramble today. To all who didn't match - good luck today and tomorrow, and keep your chin up! G-surg was very tough this year, there were at least 2 competitive surgery applicants in my class who didn't match. The next 48 hours are rough, but hang in there!
