Hey all,
I am currently a medical student in the UK at UCL (University College London). I am a UK national but hold a green card. So I was considering doing the USMLE to keep my options open (post-grad training has become a farce over here because of gov mis-management)
Anyway I have just completed my 2nd year, and I am planning to take step 1 in oct/nov this year. after reading many many post on SDN I have a far idea where I should start for my prep.
So here is the books im going to use (what do you guys think)
FA 2008 (ill try and memorise it all)
BRS phys and path (again try to memorise as much as possilble)
HY bio, cell and mol, gross anatomy, embro, neuro anatomy, and brain/behaviour.
also i try do as many q banks's i can do.
(can any1 recommend a very good pharm book)

So what i want to know is whether I need to memorise BRS phys and path word for word, like FA, or just understand concepts. Also how would I go about using the high yield books (stupid question i know, do i try memorising everything in them). I am asking sily questions like this because the course at UCL is systems based, so we get a course book (published by the school) before each module, and contains notes for most lectures and a recommended reading, from which we make notes. so we use hundreds of books in the first two years, taking bits from each. ALso looking at the 150 free questions on the usmle site, i have noticed the path is far more detailed than we have been taught, so would learning ecrything in BRS path prepare me well for it?

I dont mean to come on all egotistical but i got a distinction for my first two years, about the top 8-9% class get this, and UCL is one of the most selective schools after Oxbridge, so id like to get 230+( unrealistic probably). So how should i go about achieving, is it a reasonable goal to set considering internationals do not do to well?

Final question what is the passing percentage for the test. in our MCQ's the passing mark is usually set at around 50-55%. about 10-20% of the class fail the first time around. having a quick look at the 150 questions
step looks harder.

Sorry for the really long post

Hi!

Don't worry...you are not asking silly questions. It's important to know these things.

The key to doing well on the USMLE is actually not trying to memorize everything but actually trying to make sure you UNDERSTAND everything well (well at least as much as you can, because there is a vast amount of info). While memorization will help you to some extent, the test is really one of application and putting your conceptual understanding to the test. If you have a good understanding of your fundamental principles in every subject, then you will be able to use logical reasoning to figuring out why for example physiological and pathophysiological processes occur the way they do. The task of trying to memorize everything is way too overwhelming. For instance, the test is known for asking students to be able to interpret such things as graphs that test your understanding of physio but may ask it in a way you are unfamiliar with. Now, if you just memorized physio graphs in your book, you may not be able to come up with the answer because you don't understand what the graph is showing.

So...make sure you understand the concepts well when you can (and try to integrate knowledge across subjects), and obviously supplement with memorization when called for (esp. in subjects such as anatomy, micro, pharm).

Understanding is the first priority and then memorization.

Although students have their preference of resources they like to use, many students would probably classify these sources as being very good sources for preparation for the Step 1:

Rapid Review Pathology by Edward F. Goljan (the newest is the Second Edition (blue cover))
BRS Pathology 3rd edition - a good source also, but most people think RR Path by Goljan is better
BRS Physiology 4th edition
HY Embryology
HY Histology (although some people don't even use a histology book)
HY Neuroanatomy 3rd edition
HY Anatomy or ROADMAP Anatomy 3rd edition
Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple 4th edition
-->you may need an Immuno source too
BRS (4th edition) Behavioral Science or HY Behavioral Science
HY Cell and Molecular Biology
Lippincott's Biochemistry
Lippincott's Pharmacology 3rd edition; although many people like using PHARM flash cards as a good way to learn pharm

The Kaplan series of lecture notes is also excellent, but RR Pathology by Goljan (mentioned above) should probably be used as a primary Pathology resource.

Also, make sure you subscribe to a question Bank which is absolutely crucial for preparation. qBanks include the very popular and EXCELLENT USMLEWorld Step1 qbank (http://www.usmleworld.com/) and/or the Kaplan qBank which is also very good (www.kaptest.com).

And please excuse me if I am misunderstanding your post about the whole memorization thing. I'm sure there are gonna be some SDN pros that will give you some valuable advice as well soon.

Good luck!!
