I have my AECOM interview coming up and need to start looking for lodging. I plan to stay a couple of days after my interview to sightsee (since I already forked over the dough to fly all the way over there, might as well, right?). Does anyone know of a good place (area or hotel) where it'll be close to campus and to tourist spots as well? Ive heard the Bronx is pretty shady but any good areas in there somewhere to stay at? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

🙂
Thanks!

Stay at the upper west side in manhatten. I stayed at the Belford hotel, it was pretty cheap ($80/night) and about 1 hour by subway+bus to the school, plus you would be right there in manhatten, 1 block away from the subway. The hotel is on 87th street, 200 something West.

I'm actually in NY right now for my AECOM interview tomorrow. I'm staying at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel just for tonight (I stayed in the city with a friend last night to go out and sight see, etc.). The Sheraton is pretty nice with a free shuttle to/from the LaGuardia airport (which saves a lot of cab money). Plus, it's only about 7 miles from AECOM - cheap cab ride. I would suggest that you stay at the Sheraton for the night before your interview and then relocate into the city for the rest of your nights in NY (it's a straight shot to Grand Central Station on subway 7 and the subway stop is literally around the corner from the hotel). I chose not to book a hotel in the city because the subway/bus system kind of intimidates me and I didn't want to deal with extra stress the morning of my interview. Travel times also tend to be long via subway/bus.

Oh, and I found online rates for the Sheraton at $159 a night.

Hope this helps.

Ok, so, one word of advice (from my experience): Sheraton was a great hotel...everyone was very helpful. The free airport shuttle was great. BUT, taxis to/from the interview = not that cheap. In fact, taxis anywhere in NY not that cheap because you have to pay tolls, etc.

Just to warn you....sorry I said otherwise.

But I would still recommend the Sheraton as a hotel. Just depends on if you'd rather spend more money on other things than taxis...

If you'd like to save money on taxis, I would say get a hotel on the 4/5/6 subway line or the 1/2/3 (green or red; along lexington avenue or 7th avenue). Take either the 5 or 2 to 180th street, leave the station, cross the street, and take Bx21 to Einstein. You can ask the driver to let you know when you hit Einstein, but it should be pretty obvious.

I'm thinking hotels on Lex or 7th will not be as cheap as a Sheraton in Queens (just guessing that's where that hotel was), but it is nice to stay in manhattan especially if you're from out of town. I've found hotels in manhattan for around $100 a night. You may even be able to find one that doesn't charge by the hour. 🙄

Don't be intimidated by the subway system. It is your friend, and it is the cheapest way of getting around the city besides walking. Your hotel may have subway maps, but if they don't, just ask where you can get one. In general - green is east side, red/blue are west side, and south of 14th street anything goes.

You can ask your hotel about shuttles to LGA or JFK. They usually leave from the Grand Central or Penn Station areas and are reasonably priced.

Too much information?

Good luck with the interview.

Actually, the Sheraton was $159 a night...so if u can find something cheaper and decent in Manhatten, it sounds like that may work out just fine too....
