sorry for the error in the 1st post.
I always read many discussions talking about age of medical students and how does it affect their career & residency options.
I would like you to post 3 #.s :
1- average age of 1st year med students at your SOM or interns at your residency program
2- youngest age
3- oldest age

thanks for contribution.

Here at UAMS the average M1 age is 25, youngest is 21, oldest is 37 I believe.

I expected posts representing all the SOM here !!!

Got your point Kimberli .. 😉
what about your SOM ?

Average age at my school is around 24
Oldest is late 30s to early 40s
Youngest is 19

Our youngest is 20
Average is like 25
Oldest is 47

MSU COM has someone who is 56 yrs old...I guess its never to old to go into medicine.

At Nevada-
Youngest is 21, oldest is 48, with the average right about 23-24.

youngest is 19 (wow)
avg is 25
and oldest is mid forties I believe. (double wow)

I'm 30 myself and some gross lab members are 26, 26 and 27.

It's funny but most groups have made friends around the same age range. It's nice to have this diversity, cause I'm pretty well over the euro-trash oompa oompa clubs that most class outings are planned around, so us old foggies can go sit and socialize at the neighborhood bar. 😉

no offense to the youngens out there 😉

As far as age is concerned, don't be concerned. I figure if you are lucky enough to find the one thing you want to do with your life you should do it and damn the consequences.

Hi Shorrin,

Penn.

Youngest- 20 (two)
Oldest- 30
Average- 22.7 (but we didn't believe this when they told it to us. I think it is more like 23.7)

Our class average age was 24-25...however, I'm estimating 66% of our class was 22/23 and only 5% were above 30.
youngest was 21...possibly 20.
oldest was 39 or 40.

For my entering class, I believe it was something like this:

Youngest: 21
Mean: 25/26
Oldest: 40-something or 50-something

Most of the class was around 22-24.

We have quite an age spread... when we started, our youngest was 19 and our oldest was 52. Most people were in their early - mid 20's.

Class average: 22.7(2.3)
Range: 18 to 30

Dam, I guess I'd better take Penn off my "apply to list" for 2004 list (age 36) 🙁

I think this was just a younger class than they usually have. Can't hurt to apply and see how it is next year.

at my school:

youngest 20
median 22 or 23
oldest: 34

UCSF

Youngest: 21
Oldest: 35
Ave: 25

At the age of 30, I do not feel out of place. 70% of our class took at least one year off. Some of our class took time off between high school and college as well.
