I've been provided with an opportunity to serve two years as a GMO before reapplying to the match in 2012. My list of potential bases include shaw, tinker, vance, little rock,mcconnell,davis-monthan. I would like to moonlight for these two years to keep my skills sharp and beef up my applications/letters of rec for the next round. I have one year of general surgery down with heavy critical care experience and have been qualified to perform many minor procedures. Can someone with experience moonlighting please comment on any restrictions the Air Force sets for this? Are there limited hours I can moonlight weekly? ANY information provided about moonlighting as a GMO would be a great help, can't seem to find a lot of info out there on this...

The first thing you need to look at is licensing requirements for the States that those bases are located in. Several states require 2 years of GME prior to being able to be licenses, and in those states you would therefore not be able to moonlight.

There's an AFI on this, but basically you gotta have/get:
-unrestricted medical license in the state in which you're moonlighting
-independent DEA# ($550)
-command approval
-backup coverage and be able to leave quickly in case of a recall, emergency, etc.
-log your hours
-have independent malpractice insurance
-current ACLS, ATLS, and maybe PALS certification

You also can't legally treat DoD dependents except in emergency situations (i.e. can work a rural ED but really limits your ability to work an acute care clinic).

So are there specific restrictions set by the AFI or does your command determine that? And how easy is it to find moonlighting positions that have backup all the time in case u get recalled?

Yeah it's AFI 144-102 section 1C. Your command can be more restrictive of course.
