I am applying for the Air Force HPSP and I have a phone interview with a major this thursday. Anybody have tips on this or what it would be like? I went through two medical school interviews and I was fine on both, but I just wanted to get an idea of what it would be like. Thanks in advance!! 😀

Of course I have no idea how yours will be, but I can tell you about mine. I talked with a captain who was a nurse. She was SUPER nice, seriously could not have been any nicer, it was really a conversation and not an interview. She did ask me why medicine/why military/why air force so I think you can expect that. When I decided to do HPSP for sure she heard from my recruiter and drove a few hrs to do my commissioning!

we have a "con" thread now to vent on. no more derailing honest questions and legitimate posts with your agenda. the OP did not ask about AF medicine, they asked about the interview. please respect them enough to allow them to get some useful information without jumping on them.

thanks.

did Homunculus delete my response to cyclegirl?

I do NOT recall my response to her as "rude" or otherwise negative toward her.

I hope this is not a sign of the future whereas thread replys will be deleted. I understand that there is another thread within this site in which can describe the pros and cons of military medicine, but it is not reasonable to think that "discussions" should only take place at that location.

for example, if someone starts a thread on "should I choose surgery or radiology"...................is Homunculus expecting all negative responses to go to the "con" thread? The replies deleted were NOT responses to the thread originators question on the interveiw, they were part of a discussion from cyclegirl/island doc about nursing supervision. Threads will often tangent off like that.

I understand that Homunculus is "protecting" users from verbal attacks, I just hope that there is a better way to do this rather than deleting entries or expecting that all discussion occur only on those two threads (pro-con threads).

NJEMT1, thank you very much for your reply on this topic. I just had the interview literaly a half hour ago, and exactly what you said, why military/medicine/air force- those were the questions. Very laid back, took about 10 minutes. Thanks again for your input- I really appreciate it.

As for the other users who had posted before, I am not saying I didn't like your posts- but it had nothing to do with my question and honestly didn't belong here, I agree with Homunculus. I do appreciate all of your input very much and I am glad that experienced persons like yourselves are here to aid me in decision making, but my question was specific and pointed to the AF phone interview itself. Telling me to cancel the interview altogether is not really advice. Thats all. Thanks again! Hopefully I can give back to this forum with my experience soon 😀

see my explanation above. i have no problem with negative responses-- however, i'm making an effort to cut down on thread hijacking. this thread was an attempt to get information about an HPSP phone interview, and was derailed (yet again) into a "military medicine sucks" debate, with a healthy dose of "why nurses in the military suck, too". both completely unhelpful to the OP.

as to your attempted analogy of me expecting negative reponses to a surgery vs radiology thread to go to the "con" thread-- c'mon. do you not see the difference? stating why someone shouldn't do one or the other is fine, what i would have a problem with is if someone came into that thread stating that they should do neither and be an investment banker-- how is the latter helpful to the OP? it serves nothing more than to derail the thread.

minor infractions i will probably let slide-- but this was ridiculus.

if you have any further questions, feel free to PM me.

Mine was an AF Reserve nurse. The interview was pretty laid back. She had viewed my application extensively and pretty much wanted to know why i wanted to join the AF. She also gave me some insight into what AF life is like. If you listen and seem enthusiastic, you will do great... good luck!

yes, the "don't even go to the interview" comment was ridiculous, and I am sure the reader felt the same way you and I did.

the discussion about nursing, and "officership" was a "worthy" discussion, and probably did not warrent deletion. Yes, it was not on the topic the thread started on, by what thread doesn't tangent off?

I am officially stating that Homunculus is no longer perfect in my book.

I would have to aggree that no one was being rude to eachother and that the discussion about the nurse corp was valid, even though it was a tangent.

Hey, how'd it go? Sorry I didn't post earlier but I'll just say that mine was really easy and laid back. Being prior Air Force was a bonus. The Major I spoke with was very friendly. I hope your experience was a good as mine if not better. Good luck! I'm sure you'll get it. 👍

-Cheers,
Steve

Oh thanks a lot Steve!! Yeah it was very laid back- just about 10 minutes. It was by an Air Force major, very friendly too. I am hoping things work out. I don't have prior service but I do have MCJROTC, which I hope will help out somewhat. My application is complete now, and the interviewer said that I would get a response in a couple of weeks hehe. I'll hope for the best. Thanks again for the reply! 😀

I was being a little sarcastic, but still nice to know that your wife has you pegged right.

I think you went a little "censor happy" deleting the whole series responses noted above. 😕

The vast majority of people on this site seem to be able to deal with the threads without needing "censoring". Certainly vulgar language and someone clearly "lying" may require your attention, but I hope to NOT have future discussions simply "wiped off the face of the site". :meanie:

and here's to the future of Family medicine in the military; may God be with you all (cause it is a sure thing that your Surgeon General isn't). 🙂

I thought your wife **could care less** if you were perfect?
