I have been offered both the Navy and Air Force 4 yr scholarships and can't seem to make a decision as to which one to go with. Can anyone tell me your personal experiences, both good and bad, that might help to clear this decision up. It is coming down to the wire and I need to pick. Thank you!

I just got back from Air Force Commissioned officer training. I had very little knowledge of military life before I went in, but I can tell you that I left Officer Training School very impressed with what I saw. The Air Force treats it's people very well, and as an officer you will live comfortably. I cannot give you any advice about the Navy's programs, but I'm sure other people can weigh in. Take a look at the Financial Aid forum and do a search on HPSP to see what others have already discussed. Also, for Air Force specific advice, visit Luke Ballard's AFHPSP website at http://lukeballard.tripod.com/HPSP.html as well as the Air Force Institute of Technology's HPSP website at http://ci.afit.edu/cimj/default.asp.

Feel free to PM about any specific questions you have, but as I have no idea what you're looking for in your career, I won't try to pursuade you one way or the other. As long as you understand you are signing up for more than a scholarship--you'll be an officer first; a doctor second--you'll probably be happy either way.

It depends of what you like. If you have no previous military experience: Go Air Force. Most civilians say that it's the best of the Armed Forces in terms of caring for you as a person (family, etc). I love the Navy, I love getting underway, going overseas, I can't imagine my life away from the ocean. I'd think I'd die if I had to live anywhere far away (longer than a 20min drive) from the beach. I just got commisioned as an Ensign in the Navy and I'll be attending NYCOM for the next 4 years. I spend 5 years as enlisted in the Navy and I am so happy I got the Navy HPSP.

What do you like? Do you like the water or do you get sea sick? Do you like planes or ships? If you are not sure about spending 6 months in a ship underway in the persian gulf or Europe, then GO Air Force! Best of luck! And if you end up chosing the Navy, you can PM me or e-mail me and I'll be happy to talk to you a bit more about how great my experience in the Navy has been.

I love the Navy, but I'll be the first one to tell you that the Navy is not for everyone.

It depends on what you specialize in as to where you will be. The Air Force has a lot of small bases in pratically unknown areas. Would you be happy in Nebraska? Granted, most of these locations only contain clinics that are staffed with primary care physicians. MOST specialists end up going to the larger installations, such as Keesler or the main training facility in Texas. (I forgot the name)

From what I have read regarding the Navy, most ship slots fill up relatively quickly by volunteers. This doesn't mean you won't be forced to serve on a ship. Also, Navy docs treat the Marine Corps too. This means you may end up at a field hospital in a combat zone. Remember the "Devil Docs" in Iraq? That could be you. I think this would be an interesting experience, however. I am not aware of any similar deployments by the Air Force.

Plus the Navy has better uniforms.

Personally, I will more than likely choose Air Foce. It's more "family friendly" and most of my buds are in the AF.
