I'm wondering how everyone (from Alaska) is doing with the University of Washington this year...

I know they took FOREVER to certify me as an Alaska resident, and I just wanted to know if anyone else had that problem. Any interviews yet? Any acceptances yet? I will be there next week and I would like to find out what is in store for me (from other Alaska residents, preferably).

Thanks...

Hey!!
I'm an Alaska Resident and right now I actually live in Seattle, like 1 mile from UW. I actually didn't apply because I was out of the state for more then 180 days and didn't get my PFD, so Alaska wouldn't fill out my residency paperwork. I can't really tell you anything about the medical school but I can give you the scoop on Seattle and what it's like here. I also can tell you a little bit about what I've heard about doing the UW program as an Alaska resident. Just message me.
good luck next week.
If you want someone to show you around Seattle just let me know.
oh where are you from in AK? I'm from Eagle River.

I'm from Fairbanks and interviewed at UW-WWAMI program last year. My interview day started with lunch and meeting current students. Two of the three students were 2nd year Alaskan WWAMI students. Many of the interviewees were Alaskan applicants but not all.

My interview was with a panel of interviewers: two physicians and a resident. All from Alaska. They asked the standard interview questions regarding why medicine and my background, etc. They brought up some 'ethical' dilemma about liver transplants and alcoholics. They asked me to discuss some of the more difficult issues facing healthcare in the U.S. today.

Then there was a tour by a 3rd year student with a short stop at financial aid for a brief presentation. Then a discussion in the office of multicultural affairs. The day was over by 4:00 p.m.

About a week later they sent out letters. I was in the 2nd pool of Alaska applicants and we all got waitlisted. They only interviwed Alaskan residents in two batches, one in January and one in February. The waitlist only moved by one person last year. Since you are in the first interview pool your chances are much greater than if you were in the second interview pool.

Let me know if you have any specific questions. Best of luck.

Jenny--

Thanks for the offer. I have family in Seattle, so they will be taking care of me while I'm there. To answer your question, I'm from Fairbanks. Born and raised there, and just graduated from UAF.

mpp--

Thanks for the information. I don't even know why they bother to have a waitlist for Alaska residents. No Alaskan in their right mind would reject an offer from UW. By any chance, do you know how many seats the other three states get in each class (Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming?

By the way, when did you take physics. I may have been your TA. Although I graduated from UAF in 1996, I've spent several years on and off working for the physics department.

I know that Idaho had 14 seats last year. I don't know how many Wyoming or Montana have.

Idaho had 18 seats last year. It increased from 16 the year before. We're hoping we can at least get back to 20 which we had some years back.

I have my interview on the 16th and from everything I've heard, UW is definitely the worst. This will be the first one I have (OHSU on the 28th) and I've heard that there is a UW ethics site that is helpful but I can't find it. Can't seem to reach my friends that have already had their interviews at UW and know the site. Any tips? How many spots are we looking at? Good luck to all.

mpp--

I took Physics during the '99-'00 school year. I had a TA named Justin and a TA named Cliff. I don't think either of them were headed towards medical school. Did you TA at the 100 or 200 level? I took 211 and 212--sucked at MCAT time 'cause I didn't know squat about optics...

Jo--

Here's the site address...

Total amount of seats for AK is ten...but in the last decade every class has had five each for male and female applicants. So each applicant really is competing for five spots. Hope this helps, and good luck.

P.S. You at UAA right now?

No, just graduated in December from a small private school in Washington called Pacific Lutheran University. Did my freshman year at UAA, though. Graduated from Dimond in 98. Thanks for the help, did you say you had already had an interview there? For some reason, I am convinced that they're going to ask me who I think should be Time Man of the Year. Any ideas?

Nice to see some other Alaskans on here.

Graduated Kodiak HS in 1990, Army brought me back to Fairbanks and Delta Junction in in late '90s. Applying first time this year.

UW interview was first one and an experience. Had an interesting time getting certified as SoA wanted to go over my PFD application with a fine tooth comb.

Other than UW, where else have you applied to school and how's that going?

I interviewed last year and was placed on the waitlist at #7 (1 spot behind mpp, who interviewed on the same day as I did in the 2nd batch of Alaska interviewees). I thought the waitlist moved 2, but regardless, it doesn't move much! Although apparently the year before it moved 5!! I thought my interview went extremely well, and my application was fairly successful at other schools (5 acceptances, 1 to a top 10), so it's hard to say exactly what they want. High numbers maybe -- mine were middle-of-the-road (3.5,30), although my app was strong in all other areas. Had no problem with residency certification even though my PFD app has been audited yearly since I went to undergrad out of state. I have heard some complaints about the quality of the 1st year at UAA from a friend who did get in -- she's kind of wishing she'd gone elsewhere.
