Starting at AMC in a few weeks, and have a chance to get a computer.

Any need at all for a laptop at AMC?

Conversely, does AMC have available computers such that I won't need my own?

Thanks

I graduated form AMC last year, and never found a need for a laptop computer. In fact, no one in my class ever used one, although I do recall a few underclassmen using some. The main problem is that as of now, the lecture halls are not wired for eternet access. However, there are plenty of computers for students to use in the library, as well as 12-20 PC's and Mac's in two smaller computer labs that are open 24 hours. Laser printing, color scanning, and Palm hot sync ports are all available.

Many thanks Surgicane. I knew about the computers available, but wasn't sure how much people used the computers for class.

Hey,

Congrats! Only a couple more weeks! I'm a second year. Well, I wouldn't say that you need a computer. However, there are some online exams which you can take from home if you have a computer with internet access. Also, sometimes lecturers put slides on the web. Also, for histology first year, there's a main site that the histo prof likes to use and test from. But it's not necessary because as you know there's plenty of computer access. I have a laptop, but it's merely for entertainment purposes right now. See ya in a few weeks.

i wish i had a laptop,
i could easily view downloaded pages from the best
med site. umich.edu 🙂

paramed2premed,

Congrats on getting accepted! I'm a 2nd yr so will see you this wk sometime.

A laptop may make life a little easier since you can type the few papers (for Ethics, ect) at home. Also, you can view the Histology CD at home. But I did all of this at the computer den at AMC (I've never had a problem getting a computer in the evenings) and did just fine. I wouldn't spend money on it though unless you are looking for a new distraction/hobby. Which is usually a good thing in med school to take you away from the sciency stuff.

If you have any further questions, pm me. See you soon!!
