Hi,

I'm starting at Albany Med in August. Being Canadian, I've never had private health insurance and can't tell if the group coverage being offered by Albany Med is worth the $2000 per year. Does anybody that will be attending Albany Med have any comments on the quality of the health plan? Should I look into finding my own health plan? Can anyone recommend a good health insurance provider/plan? If anyone could recommend one that also includes dental and vision, that would be even better.

Oh, in case you're wondering, my Canadian health plan will only cover the cost of emergency health care while I'm in the US and will only reimburse what it would cost for the equivalent care in Canada (which is much less) - that's why I need the private health insurance.

Thanks a bunch!

There are probably others more qualified but my $0.02 - I think it is hard to beat $2000 on the private indiv. insurance market in New York state. Many (most actually) co.'s have exited the indiv. market in NY altogether. Having said that I know that AMSA, e.g., does offer members insurance options, don't know cost but i think it was 1000-2000 per year. Also, student-specific insurance options are probably out there. Hope someone else is able to provide more specifics.

Thanks for the tip. Anyone else got any advice?

Albany isn't that far from the border, can't you pop back over for routine care? If you can, you might look for just a minimal catastrophic coverage policy, and get routine coverage in Ontario.

I'll do that as often as I can, but Albany isn't really that close; a 6 hour drive. I can hope I won't get too sick too often, but I think it would be safest and more convenient to just get a private health insurance plan.
