Ok, so idk about other universities, but at my school, this is mainly a pre-med organization. Everything is based around medicine and all the preceptorships (shadowing opportunities), etc. are with medical doctors.

even though this is the case for my school, i was wondering if it would do me any advantage to join. they still do a lot of community outreach and volunteering, but the specific chapter by-laws speak of pre-medical students (as opposed to the national by laws which refer to "pre-health" students)

im curious because i enjoy a lot of the things they do, and i'd like to know if my time would be spent wisely elsewhere (already a member the pre-dent society and another club)

The fact that our chapter refers to itself as the "pre-med honor society" just makes me sick to my stomach. How much of a shameless resume booster is that? lol

mine pretty much does as well

but they do have many very good community service opportunities...

I joined AED and listed it on my app, and it worked fine for me. Although i do agree that we predents are limited in numbers in AED hehe 🙂

i am an executive officer at my universitiy's chapter, and i can say that there is not only a strong representation of predental (~40%), but there a tremendous number of opportunities for predental students (shadowing, Healthy Smiles at the Boys and Girls Club, Give kids a smile at UNLV SDM, peer opportunities at UNLV SDM).

AED is a "pre-health" honor society more than anything. Join your chapter, and take the initiative to institute the kind of things you'd want as a predent 🙂

good idea...might look into a leadership role

i was the only predent in a sea of premed students at our school. joined AED, listed on my app, and thought it was a wise move. even if it is heavily favored for premed you can still meet a lot of cool people, get a lot of info about the prehealth application process in general, and it is a solid extracurricular. do it.

I LOVE AED! (at my Univ. anyway)

It's a great networking tool. My optometrist used to be in AED and a dental student I shadowed was the President of my chapter a few years ago.

Also, there are SOO many leadership opportunities in AED.

Join what makes you happy and what you'll enjoy.

There National Conference is in Tampa this year March 18-21. Hope to see some AEDers there =)

you shadowed a dental student?

is that normal? (i honestly don't know...ive heard of some pre-dents going and checking out the clinics of local dental schools and even of internships but never of shadowing a particular student...just curious)

yes some schools have a "mentoring program" between predent and current dental students.

wow...thatd be nice

our pre dental society has some opportunities to volunteer at the local DS clinic, but thats all ive heard of or experienced so far

id love to spend a day seeing wat DS would be like

I think it is not a great idea of joining AED. You probably will not learn much and will feel left out. Start your own ASDA, but you have to call it something else since the real ASDA is only for DS.

Here at UH, we started the American Student Dental Assoc, which was latter "Alliance", like 6 or 7 years ago and we're really strong. We have dental schools fly into town to come to our meetings, have dentists come speak to us each meeting, and always get food sponsored by various organizations. Also it's a great way to talk to other dental students and learn more about dentistry.

Not to mention if your group is successful like we were, and does lots of dental and non-dental events ranging from Give Kids a Smile to Intramural Dodgeball, then you will get the most out of it.

why would the OP feel left out? AED is all about being proactive. If you want to volunteer at a certain event/organization, start a committee and make it happen. We also have dental schools (in addition to medical/vet/opt schools) come and talk about their programs, in addition to the military and other organizations like Colleges Against Cancer). AED has a national conference every year, a magazine that Chapters can publish articles in, offers scholarships to current applicants, and it is an honor society - you gotz to have dem grades to be in it 😎

It's not to say that the OP shouldn't start a Pre-ASDA chapter or anything, but don't dog of AED when it offers all of the things you are talking about and more. 😉

id love to start an organization, and i plan on doing so but i dont think it will be dental related, we already have a pre dental society that does all of the pre dent stuff (its just not quite as active as id like)
