I know that it is popular to chose orthopedic surgery as a gateway to pursuing sports medicine. Can someone go the sports medicine route through general surgery?

Are there any other routes to pursue sports medicine while still focusing on the surgical aspects of the specialty?

Family med and internal can do sports.

Ortho is the only one that can do sports in surgery.

Right, you can do a one year fellowship after your FP residency in Sports Medicine. However the only way to do surgical sports medicine is via orthopedics. And most "sports medicine" do a sports medicine fellowship after their 5 year Ortho residency. Although to do sports medicine in ortho you don't have to do the fellowship.

You can also get into Sports Medicine through PM&R, EM, Peds, and IM.

What do you mean by SM? Do you want to chill on the sidelines of the Packers game, or do you want to operate on B. Farve. There is a world of difference.....
