Is there any medical school that makes volunteering a mandatory part of its medical school curriculum? Sounds like a paradox, but I think it would be a wonderful screen for applicants who really would like to serve the community versus those ones who only want to grab the money and run with the prestige.

Making volunteer hours mandatory will not weed those people out.

What about reducing the tuition fee and making students volunteer in underserved rural communities during medical school and at least 1 year postgraduate?

There are government funded programs which pay your tuition if you agree to practice for so many years in a medically underserved or rural area.

However, if you were to make this standard for medical school, you may find a decrease in applicants.

Despite the fact that many people go into medicine for the fact they can help others...adding more requirements may hurt applicant numbers.

Look at Pharmacy...they added one year to the mandatory curriculum and numbers crashed.

Youre forgetting what private school is all about...the school making LOTS of $$$$....do you EVER think that tuition will be lowered?

*raises hand* sometimes I feel like a lemming...

True altruism does not exist... anywhere... But if you want to do volunteer work in underserved communities... NSU has plenty of opportunities, including mission trips to Jamaica and Guatemala. You can even do a prison roataion in your 4th year if you're into that sort of thing.
