Alum letters

I am waitlisted at a school I LOVE and a family friend is an alum. He has offered to write me a recommendation in hopes of that nudging me off the waitlist. Do you all think that this is a good idea? Do you think it will help? I appreciate his offer but don't want to waste his time.... and I feel a little dirty, I'll admit it. Is this 1. kosher and 2. advisable? Thanks.
