Hey guys and gals (especially all my future NC RPhs), I start classes next Wednesday at UNC-A and since I'm trying to complete all of my pre-reqs in two years, I have a pretty hefty schedule right now it seems. Do you think I can handle this courseload and maintain good grades? As of now I don't have a job, but I would like to get some experience as a pharm tech at the pharmacy next to my school.

Courses:
Calculus 1 (4 hours)
General Chem w/ lab (4 hours)
Foundations of Academic Writing (4 hours)
Intro to Sociology (3 hours)
Liberal Arts Colloquium "21st Century Health Professions" (Required elective, 3 hours)

What does everyone think?

That doesnt seem like an extremely tough courseload. Though there are a few 4 credit courses. Im sure that in pharmacy school you will be taking alot of courses each semester and its good to get used to it now.

That's what I was thinking, too. Do you feel I would have time to get a job, also?

Looks pretty managable. Only challenging ones should be Calc and maybe Chem. The others, although time-consuming, should be a breeze.

Thanks. 👍

Seems pretty easy. How does your time schedule look like? I'd hate to have those classes at like very random days and times throughout the week. I usually like to have all my classes in a row at one time slot, ie. most classes between 9 AM - 1 PM on most days. Trying to balance morning classes with evening ones seems to be a challenge for me, when I have a huge course load.

Most of my classes are in a row except for my chem lab on Monday from 6-9PM, and on Tuesday I have one class at 8 and one at 1.

Seems doable. Good luck! 🙂

I agree with everyone else. You shouldn't have any trouble at all. Intro to Soc and that Liberal Arts Colloquium should be easy A classes. Wait until you get into pharmacy school and have 15 credit hours of just "science".

Thanks guys. I figured I'd be fine, but it's sorta weird seeing everyone else who is taking 13 hours saying that I'm gonna die 🙄 I can't wait to move in on Saturday 😀 Now for the final question: would it be feasible to get a job and still be able to get good grades?

If this is your first term/semester of college, then I'd advise you not to get a job. Maybe volunteer at a local pharmacy for like 2 hours a week or something.

I'm so glad you brought the volunteer option up because I was considering that since I wouldn't be able to work many hours. I think I'll need more time this semester to get adjusted to the college like aka time management, etc. How would I go about becoming a volunteer at oh, say, CVS?

Well, I kind of lucked out and found a great independent pharmacy store that were more than willing to help me out. Just go out to a couple of pharmacy stores near you and introduce yourself, name what college you're attending, your major, why you want to volunteer at this particular pharmacy, etc. Maybe even a resume, if you have one already made, but don't create one because it's not really necessary. It took me awhile to find a volunteer opportunity, so don't lose hope if people say no to you.

That load course load looks pretty typical. It certainly looks similar to mine. 🙂 You have a good balance of science and general ed courses. As long as you have good time management skills, you shouldn't have trouble working part-time while in school.

Good luck.

Passing these classes should be easy if you do not work...honestly. But getting all A's for such plan is still HARD even though there are only two science classes...Just my thoughts. Good luck 👍

Judging by your courses, i'm thinking you've just started college. Anyway, I would agree with what everyone else in here is saying. I guess you can take these classes since you have a nice balance with science +math with some GE courses. One thing i would like to emphasize is that if you find yourself struggling in any of the classes other than math and science during that quarter (the three other classes), you should immediately drop one. Don't ever keep any classes because of pride or thinking you can tough it out when you may not have the discipline for it. That's my take, and good luck! 👍

It is def. doable. I just want to share my first year curriculum at muhlenberg.

Calculus 1 (4 Hours)
Gen Chem (3 hours lecture 3 hour lab 1 hour recitation = 7 hours)
Bio 1 (3 hours lecture 3 hour lab 1 hour recitation = 7 hours)
Freshmen Seminar (3 hours)
Psychology (3 hours)

no i did not choose to be this way. it was how pre-med was supposed to take. it was specifically designed to get rid of people because everyone in my class thought that they wanted to be doctors. worked very well.
