Hey guys. Long post here. So according to the DO system grade replacement will no longer be in effect. And I hate to say this but I really hate myself right now. First of all I'm a sophmore in college and I received a C in gen chem 4C, a W from ochem 12A, a W from Bio 5B, and now I failed ochem 12A. I don't know how all of you guys get such a high gpa. At my school these weed out course are hard. I'm also a anthro major. Do I still have a chance in getting into med school? I just got an F in ochem and i took a W last quarter. I don't know what to do. Any guidance or counseling? Any encouragement? Any hope?

1) How many credits do you have?
2) What is your cGPA and sGPA?

You just sophomore. Get yourself together and re-take those pre-reg failures. even without grade replacement, if you continue to do well in the next 2 years, you will achieve the GPA medical schools want.

I need alot of help. Any advice? I have 2 Ws 1 C and an F now. What can i do? Also I'm a humanities major so I can't take as many science courses.

Get tutors if need be. Someone to actually explain you the theory in OChem you need to do well in the class not just tell you the answers. In Ochem you should always be able to explain why.

Again you are a sophomore, DO schools understand some people need to mature into a good student.

So you honestly think I have a chance of getting in even though 1 have 2 W's a C and an F?

Considering that you're a sophomore, you probably don't have too many credits. If you do well, your GPA should increase by quite a bit. Don't give up; seek help and move past those grades. You can do well, you just need to find out what is holding you back. Grade replacement probably wouldn't help you much if you can ace your classes from here on out because you only have 2 classes that need to be "replaced."

I have like 70-80 credits. i need 180 to graduate

Seek help from tutoring services at your school. I'm a chem tutor myself and I have helped many humanities students pass Ochem, Gen chem and other chemistry classes. I guarantee oncr you get help from a tutor, you will do much better

1. If you're going through any rough times on a personal level, be sure to seek out help and support from family, friends, or university services.
2. Don't give up and stay positive.
3. Retake Ochem. Wipe the slate of past failures and get a tutor or join a study group.
4. Do well in your remaining science courses, and you'll be fine. That sGPA can rise to 3.4 or higher.
5. A lot of people stumble in college. It's a time of growth. Forgive yourself and work hard.

All weed out courses are hard. Med school is hard, but in a different way. Your chances are bad IF you keep on the track you're on right now. Go visit your school's learning or education ceneter fast to get help with your learning style, time mgt, test taking skills etc. Then you need to ace everything from now on.

Get your **** together and work hard. You're failing for a reason. Fix it and change your habits so you can be successful.

You definitely can turn it around man. Honestly you're not in terrible shape.. you can easily get those GPAs up to a competitive level. Just a question of how bad you want it

my 3.1 sgpa is going to plummet. like drop like crazy

Try a learning specialist or learning counselor out also (general learning). If it is an issue in learning how to study, get that fixed.

Weed out courses are hard everywhere...thats why theyre weed out courses.
Honestly the whole thing felt silly and counterproductive to actually learning. Both my lecture/lab teachers in ochem1+2 were absolute douchenozzles and would not explain anything twice, never answer questions and talked down to everyone. The only teachers in the science departments at my school like this were related to ochem and biochem. All the general BCP teachers were fantastic.

Just grin and bear it, retake it. But this time, do 1 million practice problems until you can do every mechanism without thinking too hard

Hey just wanted to say, it's (almost) never too late. I decided I wanted to do medicine with far more credits than you and a mediocre gpa.... had probably 4-5 Ws and 1 F but it was all in my head. I decided there was nothing good students had innately that I didn't and I became one. Now I'm going to med school in a few months! Anything is possible but you MUST believe in yourself it will only get more challenging and life will try to test you.

Now hush with this quitting nonsense and go get help! It is humbling to ask for help but it is something you're much better learning now than later!

Agree with seeing a learning specialist. I'll add that you should probably take the summer off and evaluate if this is even what you want to do in the first place. From reading your posts, it sounds like you actually want everyone to tell you it's not worth it to try so you can justify giving up.

It's going to be very arduous bouncing back from your current position. You essentially have to make straight A's from here on out. If putting in that work and being stressed out for the next 2-ish years just to be in a place to one day apply to medical school isn't worth it to you then don't bother. Do something else. There's no shame in not being a masochist.

Look I'm applying this upcoming cycle so maybe I'm "doomed" too, lol. But I'm a non science major applicant too (cGPA=3.6, sGpa=3.4, would have been 3.55 with grade replacement), so I can kind of relate to your plight.

I didn't do great the first few science classes I took in college.. dropped o chem 1 once.. two C's in both gen chems.. did well in bio but those classes were always easy for me. I went to a top public university where 50% of the freshmen class think they're going to med school and then like 97% of them quit before o chem 2. Tons of weed out classes.

Anyway last year I was sitting on a pretty mediocre sGPA and low confidence in my ability to succeed in some of the pre reqs, namely the "physical" science classes. But I knew if I worked my butt off I could do well and I decided that this is what I wanted to do. So I kept taking the classes, retook and aced gen chem 1 and gen chem 2, aced o chem 2, aced biochem 1 and 2, physics 2, physio 2. I NEVER in a million years thought I could do well in O Chem 2... but I changed my attitude about these classes and my work ethic and ended up loving them once I gained a baseline of the material.

So, long story short, if you want it bad enough you can definitely do it. You have tons of time to dig yourself out. It's just a question of how bad you want it. If you think you could be as happy doing something else, then maybe now is a good time to walk away. If you're unsure about medicine, there's nothign wrong with putting the brakes on taking these courses, focusing on your major, and getting clinical experience through volunteerign or any entry level healthcare job.

Regardless of your choice, good luck man. You're gonna be fine! Just don't sell yourself short if this is what you want.

General consensus is to buck up and retake those classes while seeking extra help through tutors. I totally agree with that. Every school has resources to help struggling students but those resources are worthless if you don't use them. These classes are going to be hard no matter where you take them. We are all learning the same material. If you don't learn well with a particular professor and there are no other options, you can benefit from using online resources like Khan Academy and more self-teaching methods. I have total faith that if you want it bad enough AND put in the work for it, you can definitely get yourself into medical school.

However, if your heart truly isn't in it or you're constantly doubting yourself, you may not be able to do it. You have to take the bad with the good and push through it and stay confident. (I know, easier said than done.) Make sure that this is really what you want and jump right back on that train.

As a side note, you mentioned that you're a humanities major and therefore, can't take as many science classes. You may want to consider switching to a science major or maybe picking up a science minor. If you are struggling so much in science classes, you may want to consider intentionally exposing yourself to as many science classes as possible and you can't do that effectively if you are limited in the classes you can take. When I discovered what my sore spot was in terms of classes, I decided to make it my major so I could really concentrate on it. It will be a lot of work and I would think carefully about whether or not this method may work for you but consider it. You're anthropology classes won't prepare you for medical school (at least most won't), but your biology and chemistry classes will. Jump on as much of the hard stuff now so that it hopefully won't be so hard for you once you get to medical school. There's no way to get around these topics so I would start them as early as possible; it's either now or later in medical school when it will be even more difficult.

Keep your head up, some of us (cough, cough) take awhile to figure out how to get As instead of Cs. You want to be a doctor? Is it a burning passion that drives you forward past the crush of failure? Then you can do it. keep trying new things, like increasing your available time for studying and homework. Try tutors although they aren't for everyone (did nothing for me, as I understood the material I just didn't give myself enough time to learn it back then). If you need motivation this page helps many people who face stumbling blocks and are nervous about their future:

So, stay the course, find out what the magic formula is for you to get As, and you will make it!
