This was posted by someone else and somone replied saying

p1v1=p2v2 where (2)(.8)=(1.6)(x)

and it does give the right answer.

why 1.6 for the new volume?
How does injecting the 400ml bring down the volume from 2 liters??

thanks

1. Into a two liter vessel, containing a gas at 0.8 atmospheric pressure, 400mL of mercury is injected. What would be the new pressure? (There is no evidence of a chemical reaction)

The answer is 1atm. Can somebody explain how to get 1atm?

You have 2 liters of Gas initially, so when you add in .4 liters of mercury, a Liquid at room temperature, it takes up the space initially occupied by the gas so you have a decrease of .4 liters which is how you get 1.6 liters for the new volume.
