Am I shooting myself in the foot by choosing an out of state med school over a CA school despite wanting to potentially match back to CA in the future? Both schools are equally ranked... just worried about my ability to match. Interested in either pediatrics or surgery.

Also how do people match successfully? Is it based on your letters and steps scores? Is it people connections?

Doing away rotations, specially for some specialties, can help you gain connections to match back into CA! Lots of people come to CA from out of state every year for their residency.

No to first question.

Yes to remaining 🙂

It's not really shooting you in the foot. California is a hard state to match in even if you go to school there, but not going to school there isn't going to torpedo your chances any more than going to school there will guarantee them
