ok, my stats are on my signature.
i have 3~4 years of volunteering+shadowing experience,
have solid recommendation letters (from 2 dentists(composite), and oral surgeon, science prof, non-science prof, and a medical school director)
with solid job above 21 at least in all sections on the DAT, 3.8 GPA..with 2 years of published research
experience...

I thought i was set!,,but as a "new member" here at SDN..
reading and seeing how so many people got over AA 23~24..with 3.9s
i am starting to worry about me getting in to dental school;;;

I really want to go to UCLA or UCSF as a non-resident student..
also i applied to 12 other schools,,(total of 14) to increase my chances;
my app is all sent(i guess there are thousands of people here who
got interview positions already though;;)

is it just me? or is this something all the new members feel
when they go through some of the posts here?? lol

do i even stand a chance of getting into UCLA or UCSF??

*content updated and a little note - I got into UCSF!! class of 2011 as an out-of-stater, i was also invited to UCLA interview :) and withdrew for UCSF position :)*

Thousands of people have applied...but only a few if any that I've heard of on SDN have gotten interviews...so don't stress. Also, you just took the DAT so it will take a couple weeks for dental schools to get your nfo and look at your file, so even if you don't hear from anyone for a couple weeks, you'll be fine...so long as you don't die of a heartattack in the mean time.

No, you are not the first to stress out suddenly when seeing the SDNer (who by the way occuply only a small percentage of the applications)

No, you are no the first person with great chances to suddenly question him or herself.

No, you are not the first person to ask this question

and

Yes, you are probably over reacting.

That being said...I was wondering why you only had one science professor write you a letter of recommendation. Some schools require a minimum of two science professors...you may want to check that the other people you got are sufficient...it would suck for a great applicant not to get in because they fudged up one minor requirement.

may i just say you are absolutely NUTS to think you can't get in with those stats. i'm a new member too, but now i feel inadequate compared to you (I've got 19/19/19). I'm not just nervous, i'm TERRIFIED.

good luck to you!

Oh, our school has pre-dental committee and i already got a compsite
letter for that which counts as another science letter..in all the schools
that i am applying to;;;

and for many schools pre-dental committee letter fulfilled all the requirements..

Thank you so much for calming me down;; :)
Best wishes to you!

illustrator, you'll probably get multiple acceptances.

I probably would have applied to less schools if I were you. I don't think you'll have that much trouble getting in somewhere.

I'm fairly confident that I'll get in somewhere, but I am worried about getting into my first choice.

Honestly I think half the people on here are lying about their scores.....if you have ever seen the scoring its almost impossible to get some of the super high scores, like I got a 26 on the reading, and that pans out to 2 questions wrong out of 50. And on biology you can't even get a perfect 30. So they are either lying or have no life and study all the time. We all know that their is a very small percentage of people who can actually pull off perfect scores and hardly study, and i'd be willing to bet that they are the majority of people on here. Don't worry, you have awesome stats, you'll be fine. I know people who have gotten interviews with a 15 AA, and people who have gotten in with 16's in sections.

I always figured most of the people on SDN fall into the "have no life and study all the time catagory" :)

I don't plan on sleeping until I get a letter of acceptance and pay the reservation fee. Call it nerves if you like.

I fall into the 'have nothing to do at work. . . . at all" so studying for the DAT and wasting time on SDN became my new hobby :)

yay, another i-have-great-stats-will-i-still-get-in-?-oh-my-god-oh-my-god thread.

it's like clockwork.

Tell me ur not serious....

HEY!!! I resemble that remark!

No seriously, I may have no life, but I sure as hell don't study all the time. I just hit on my teachers until they make a pass at me and then blackmail them. Also I cheat and lie...a lot. I'm not what you call ethekal. Um...ethacal. Well...you know what I mean.

Are you a weirdo? If so, you might have trouble getting in. Actually, even if you are a weirdo, you'll probably still get in.

People on SDN tend to be freaks of nature. Either that, or it gives them great personal satisfaction and self-importance to have other users on an anonymous, obscure Internet message board praise them for their falsified stats. I guess in that case, they're still freaks of nature.

Here's a more serious reply, just from my experience: Don't ever assume you're a shoo-in anywhere. Your stats are very, very good, especially considering that you have so much dental experience and research experience. However, you just never know! For example, I thought that I was practically guaranteed a spot at UOP, especially after reading countless SDN posts that "UOP loves high DAT scores!" One poster even suggested that "UOP will forgive murder for high DAT scores." My DAT scores were very high, but I didn't get an interview there.

You definitely do stand a chance at UCLA and UCSF, but even if you don't get in there, every school can give you a solid education. I'm actually very happy that I didn't get into my first or even second choice, because I absolutely love the school and location I'm at now.

Okay, I'm done preaching.

(Sincerely) Thank you.

haha well i definetely think this application process has turned me into a freak of nature. Waiting for mail and going on SDN have become my favorite past times. Both have become increasingly depressing as nothing comes to me in the mail, and an insane number of people are posting 29/29/29 DAT scores.

oh my goodness, you are so right! I need to reduce my trips to the mailbox to every other day to try to chill out, but I just feel this force drawing me there, beckoning, convincing me every day that there is another interview letter inside. And there isn't. And all I can do is check again the next day...It's really pathetic. Then I get on SDN and someone else has an interview from Baylor and I haven't heard anything yet. What torture! We are so silly. We will really laugh at ourselves when this is all over. And then come back here and laugh at other people once we're in school.

if this person doesnt get in

im not even gonna apply, thats some ridiculous stats

I've been wanting to say this for so long, but now it's out  . I think that we should take the scores posted here and subtract them by 2-3 points, and let that be the final scores. I don't know if this is true, but it sure makes me feel a lot better

statistically, it has to be. my ex-bf was using SDN while applying to med schools two years ago, and some of the people posting 37+ mcat scores,near-flawless gpa's, and other credentials that were off the charts somehow werent getting in anywhere.

I see from your stats that you are a fellow freak of nature. Welcome to SDN!

Your stats are great, but being a non-resident is a big disadvantage for you. Are you from a WICHE state? A while back, we received an email from our Dean (UCSF) regarding the GPA and DAT of the incoming class. Average overall GPA is 3.69, sGPA is 3.66. Average AA is 21.36 and PAT is 19.97. So, you are somewhere in the middle. I'm sure UCLA's numbers are similar if not higher. And remember that UCs only take a few non-residents for their classes. Check out predents.com. It should give you a pretty good idea where you stand. Good Luck!

Yes, i am from one of the WICHE states- UCSF even made a visit to our
school this year(which only happens in like 7 years hahaha).

it just goes to show that good stat's aren't the only requirement to getting acceptances.

and that it makes sense that on an 'anonymous' forum, people think its easier to lie and inflate their scores in the hopes of freaking other people out. human nature, i guess.

is your other doggy jealous of the new puppy? :)

the new one was a "you studied hard for the DAT so heres a present" puppy. she comes in four weeks(after i take the test)-hopefully the two get along!

If you only have a 21/20/20 and 3.7 it might be difficult to get into school.

The people here with 29/29/29 are exceptions and over achievers. You will be fine. Start drinking more. Nothing for you to worry about.

both my cousin and friend got in with gpa's of 3.3 and 3.5 to UCSF DAT of 20 and 19. Remember there are those below and above the average.

Lying about how cool you are is one of the two original uses of the internet.

The other is porn ;)

Seriously, some people here need to get a little more wise to how "the internets" works. When someone posts there 27 AA dat as there first post, then never posts again, you can go ahead and stop congratulating them after a few pages

Doesn't everyone's DAT score sheet tell you what percentage of the people who took the test did worse than you? What are you all worried about?

---------------
22/22/20
GPA:3.60 sGPA:3.49

It looks like only a few percentile (1~2%) from the top is actually getting into D schools... I dont know.. that was the first impression I got after reading a couple of thread here in SDN.
