AMCAS Update 7/25/01

AMCAS applicant data transmitted to medical schools does currently
include MCAT data. The absence last week of MCAT data on transmitted
applications represented a small glitch-small in the sense that once
discovered it was easy to repair. We recognize the importance of MCAT
scores in the admissions process, and regret that the transmittal of
MCAT scores for a small number of applicants was delayed due to this
error.

We have also received e-mails questioning the absence of AMCAS
commentary regarding the decision of some schools to request that
applicants forward their printed AMCAS application directly to the
schools. We know that this year's admissions process has been extremely
frustrating for applicants, advisors and medical schools alike, and that
each of you is disappointed in AMCAS for its role in delaying that
process. As such, we certainly understand the desire and decision of
some schools to try to speed this process along by asking applicants to
submit printed versions of the AMCAS application.

The medical schools that have made the decision to ask for application
print-outs were likely unfamiliar with the contents of the printed
application (which was designed to help applicants review their
application data), and most likely did not intend to receive information
not normally forwarded to medical schools, such as each applicant's list
of designated medical schools. We ask that you remind your applicants
that AMCAS considers such information confidential, and that they should
remove this information prior to sending their application print-outs to
these schools.

We too are invested in getting the admissions process up and running as
soon as possible, and as such our goal remains the same: to continue
ironing out glitches in the web application; to continue working with
each medical school to ensure the integrity of applicant data
transmitted by AMCAS; and to be forward thinking so that this bumpy
start will be only that: a bumpy start.

Hey bud,
where did you get this? I like the paragraph on designated schools, so if this is real, it's excellent news for us leaving it out. Did it come via eMail or is it on the website (i couldn't find it).

take care!

I know the obvious reasons for why people are paranoid about schools knowing the number and type of schools to which they are applying. Honestly, though, how much can this have an effect on an admissions committee's decision to accept or reject a candidate. There are SO many factors involved that I don't believe they will waste any time putting any thought or weight into knowing the schools.

Maybe it's just me, but sending in my list of schools really doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

I apologize for not indicating the source of the message in my initial post. It's actually from my premed advisor. She forwards all AMCAS related emails to the campus premed mailing list. I think it kind of puts the issue of whether or not to include the school list to rest...hopefully :D
