Anybody else see this on MSN. The most recent information available from the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the 20 highest-paying jobs based on salary data; dentists do pretty well. I bet if this were adjusted for # of hours worked, dental specialists would come out a lot higher.

This article grossly overlooked the most lucrative professions:

1. Pornography producer: $5,000,0000
2. Manwhore: $750,000
3. WWF wrestler: $2,000,000
4. Real OC Housewife: $4,000,000
5. Fluffer: $165,000

This is where the real money lies, not in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

I think oral surgery ranks higher here because a lot of them work more hours. Many OMFS work at hospitals doing cancer, reconstructive, etc. type work. I think that orthodontists probably make more per hour. OMFS is way over-rated as a dental specialty I think; in terms of lifestyle, and the type of work they do.

My entire post was a joke. I make no claims as to the accuracy or perceived accuracy of the monetary reimbursements. We all know fluffers don't make $165,000! I mean come on!

p.s. OMS is only overrated if you don't love surgery. But of course why else would you do it? If you want to specialize for the money the clear answer is ortho.

F*** yeah!

I'm not at all interested in making money. I plan on donating anything I make over $30,000 to charity every year and volunteering at a clinic on nights and weekends. [/ typical StudentDoctor pre-dent]

You'll probably be surprised to learn that the hospital-based, academic OMS are the ones earning the lowest incomes. Cancer, craniofacial, orthognathic, all that stuff pays jack squat for the most part. The moneymaking procedures are all outpatient clinic stuff, mostly shucking teeth and dropping implants.

Or to steal from one of the OMS residents here...

Yeah, i knew you were joking. Still, you indirectly implied that oral surgeons make the most bank of all dentists (you identified omfs, not ortho/prostho). Well, that's at least how i saw it. whatever. :p

Oral surgeons do make the most overall (more than ortho, endo, pros, etc.)...At least according to the American Dental Association, US Bureau of Labor Statistics, and MGMA Statistics.

However, OMFS probably have the lowest $$$/hour.

I heard that Teri Hatcher was a fluffer before she made it big. Maybe we could ask her how much they make.

That list is almost entirely SALARIES. It doesn't include bonuses (that's HUGE for CEOs). It doesn't include people who are owners or part owners of their businesses either. That excludes almost all dentists and many doctors and lawyers, for instance.
