I'm goin to med school next year and want to buy an anatomy book before so i can study a little bit, which one would you guys recommend?

For an anatomy atlas... Netter = God
For actual anatomy text, most school's I've seen use Moore's Clinically oriented anatomy...

Just my 0.02... skip the studying this summer and have fun. I tried to whole "get a leg up on anatomy the summer before" thing and believe me it really doesn't help. Have fun and enjoy your summer!! And congrats on your acceptance!!

I liked both the Netter's (hand drawn pics) and the Rohen (cadaver pics). I used each of them in different ways though. The Netter's gave me a good grasp of what I was looking for and anatomical relationships when I first started a system. The Rohen atlas I relied upon a lot closer to test time as an adjunct to the cadaver in anatomy lab.

Hope this helps some. Oh, and I would also highly recommend the Netter's flash cards. They are really portable and a good quick review when you have some time between classes or standing in a line somewhere.

I am going to guess that the two most common answers you are going to get (besides OSUDoc and many others telling you you are a fool to study before you start school 😀 ) are:

1) Gray's Anatomy for Students

2) Moore's Clinically Oriented Anatomy
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...f=pd_bbs_2/104-4122691-5405526?_encoding=UTF8

They are both good books, with the Gray's being a bit more concise and the Moore a bit more detailed in scope.

For pictures, Netter is pretty much the standard. Just FYI, I believe that you get Netter for free when you join SOMA, so you might want to hold off on it.

A popular review is the BRS Gross Anatomy Review.

Ever since I did my first dissection, I've developed a patholgical hobby of collecting anatomy atlases so it's a subject near to my heart. If anyone shares my expensive affliction, the new Thieme atlas series is amazing. Only Vol 1 is out so far, but the artistry is the best I have ever seen. Seems like the best atlases always come from Germany...

I suggest looking on ebay if you decide to buy.

The only book I ever used during first year for anatomy was Netter's (free when you join SOMA for ~$60 - and most students join SOMA anyway).
As far as studying before your first year -- DONT DO IT. Have fun! It's the last time you get to relax. I doubt that anyone who spent time studying over the summer was any more prepared than the rest of us.

Netter, Rohen and Moore are all good. But if you want a book that is a combo of the three try Atlas of Clinical Gross Anatomy- Moses. This is a new book that combines the real time pics of Rohen, the drawings of Netter (sort of) and the clinical info of Moore. But it is kind of concise you might want to purchase it in addition to one of the others.

Just use the two N's. Netter and Notes. Some students will buy Moore and Daley or Gray's Anatomy for Students but they are a waste of money in my opinion. Don't even think about studying before classes start since that would be a total waste of time. Good luck.

Word. With Netter's and Rohen's you cover all the basics. It cut down my lab time considerably. Do not study in the summer when you could be drinking.

If you're going to want to study in advance, you're going to want a textbook not a picture/photographic atlas. Get Gray's Anatomy for Students, it's far more readable than Moore's. I ended up getting both, and thought Moore's was a waste of money.

Essentially, I skipped all of the class meetings for Gross Anatomy and about 2/3rds of the labs and these three books were enough:

I don't like Netter at all, it is like learning the material twice; the first time you learn what a cartoon would look like of a tissue and then you have to go back and relearn what it really looks like. Skip it and go straight to Rohen and your cadaver. I know tradition is hard to break but think for your self and save lots of time. Good luck

When looking to see what books most people recommend for preclinical years, Anatomy is the subject that seems to have little agreement. Maybe you should pick a different subject to look over and buy your anatomy books once school starts.
