Yet another attempt by the AANA to help their membership achieve parity with academic attendings by trying to lobby for a fix to the 50% reimbursement rule after they opposed it last year. This time they want their teaching CRNAs to be fully reimbursed at 100% for teaching SRNAs and to sugarcoat it to politicians they have added academic attendings to their bill.

So, What are you younger Residents going to do to prepare for Independent Practice? This means in 2017 when the AANA has won this political war for Independence where do you fit into the new paradigm?

The fellowship is your "hedge" or "extra layer of protection" that you have training (legal qualifications) beyond the CRNA with DNP. If you end up as a supervisor (as Lema and Ether predict) then a fellowship will help you secure a job. Remember, there may be a "glut" of Anesthesiologists looking for this supervisory work so a good fellowship could be the difference in maintaining/securing a job. By the way, Anesthesiologists make the best Intensivists in the hospital setting if you want to go that route.
