I agree with ligament: it is pretty much the only thing they have in common (although I'm sure someone will reply with some trumped-up similarities). What they have in common is this: easy lifestyle, lots of money, little stress.

It always cracks me up to hear someone say how much they love radiology, and how they are going into it for a whole list of reasons, and then to find out they are applying to anesth programs as a backup. Ha! I don't suppose it ever occured to them that the specialty closest to rads is in fact pathology? Much, much more similar work than gas, to be sure.

:p

yeah, why don't rads applicants use path as a backup?! That would make lots of sense. very similar. However for those using gas as a backup, it's gotta be the money and lifestyle, right?? I mean, there is so little similarity btwn the two...

Good question. My top 3 choices are actually Radiology, Anesthesia, and Path. I guess all these fields are comparable in terms of lifestyle and money... to a lesser extent with degree of patient interaction. I think Path scores slightly lower on the perceived prestige scale. Maybe Anesthesia scores a little higher on the "real doctor" scale. Pathology may be the most intellectually demanding... I dunno.

For me Rads is my #1 chioce. But if for some reason Radiology didn't exist, I think I'd be quite happy practicing either Anesthesia or Path. I suppose I chose Anesthesia as a "back up" b/c I like Physio and Pharm more than I do Path. That and my parents would prefer if I'd do Anesthesia ;).
