😱 I'm a little shocked by this. This is certainly not what I'm hearing from residents and factulty.

i think if a program wasnt compliant they wouldnt be very open about it. its not surprising that you havent heard to the contrary from residents/attendings at a particular program.

The only thing to consider is that there are degrees of non-compliance, and that this poll reduces the question down to a yes or no answer.

If you broke down the poll into three choices:

1) My program is completely compliant with the 80 hour work week
2) My program is compliant with the work hours on most rotations, though there are some services where it is very difficult to be 100% compliant AND provide good patient care.
3) My program works us like dogs with no regards to the 80 hour work week

I have a feeling that the majority that answered that they weren't in compliance would pick option 2 rather than option 3. It is very very difficult to be compliant, and there are many surgery residents who would tell you that this inflexible set of rules doesn't really work well for surgical residents. I personally feel that while the goals of the 80 hour work week are admirable (i.e. reducing resident fatigue and increasing patient safety) are admirable, but whether that occurs at 75, 80 or 85 hours is up for debate. Just food for thought.

Very good point. How about another poll FACS?

why is it that peoepl are always so scared to say anything bad about their programs? if they say something bad it's always like oh yeah but my programs great and it's probably just me. oh every time my program is noncompliant its just like sometimes and that's cool with me. you think your program cuts you the same slack like oh yeah this resident put in the wrong orders but its cool because it was just the once. hey you failed the absite but everyone does that once in a while. you guys are brainwashed zombies. progams arew either compliant or not. there's no in between.

Well, probably because "fighting the power" is gaurenteed to earn you enemies. People see you're down on your luck and like to give you a kick in the face for good measure. I guess it's human nature. On the other hand most people are fools and and are drawn to anyone peddling positive news with even a grain of credibility. Giving a upbeat spin on events is always politically advantageous. Most people have absorbed these principles so completely that they live by them without a thought. Those are the brainwashed zombies you speak of. I'm guessing your question was a rhetorical one, but I figured I'd just go ahead and answer it anyway.

That's ******ed. Aren't doctors supposed to be thinking people? 🙄

people have been trained to think, oh if i complain that means i'm not a team player = i suck. so if they get forced to do over 80 hr, they say "hey, dis is surg, that's cool." or 'it's just a few times a month" or "yeah but i was covering for someone.' the important thing is i didn't rock the boat so i'm great! 😍 😍 but it doesnt work both ways. if you **** up no pd will go 'oh i think i'll not say anything because i don't want to upset anyone' nah they call you in and give you forms to sign and letters to document and warnings to read. bitches.

Gosh, I know someone who's currently suing because he got fired from what he said on scutwork.com... the firing is apparently a breach of his Match contract.

good. hope he wins. see how cowardly admins are? they share info on prospective & current residents all the time but if you open yur mouth once uh oh! oh you can do it when your being supervised like at an interview dinner with the pd draped all over your ass while you say nice things, but that's it.  wherez it at, btw?
