Another Financial Aid question (nobody looks at the FA forum)

To those of you going to private or public out-of-state schools, how are you paying for your education? I just got my offer letter to a school that I might go to, and it's not nearly as much as I expected. Almost all of it is loans, and that's pretty scary.

Is there anything I can do, anybody I can write/talk to, etc. to get more money? Where can I find some grants and scholarships to help fund my education? Someone once mentioned writing to a bank to pick up a few thousand, but how does that work? Thanks.

There was a thread about this a few weeks ago, but it's gone and few people responded to it.

do you need more money than the school has given you. If yes then contact a bank if not then do not contact a bank because the interest will most likely be higher than what the school has. Having mostly loans is a fact of life you can try and find grants but do not be surprised if you have trouble finding any.

I really don't want to take out that much in loans. Anyone have any info on grants and scholarships that aren't school-affiliated?

I think grants and scholarships are more available when in medical school. Most of them are merit awards, so if you need financial aid other than loans, there's no need to worry at this point in time. Otherwise, I do know that there might be some awards given by your state of residence (though there might be strings attached, such as the promise to do residency there). In my case, some public libraries have information on local/state awards.
