Okay... so I know that there have been many posts regarding letters of rec but if someone can just answer me this simple question...

is it necessary to have exactly THREE letters of rec?

The deal is, I have two solid letters of rec under my belt: one from a professor I did research with and one from an instructor who teaches dental lab techniques (I took a predental course with him). Even though I am very confident that these two letters will give me some edge, I am concerned because I do NOT have a total of THREE.

I mean, I know I can scurry around and find someone who will be able to write one for me, but I think that if I submit a third, it will "take away" from the other two because it won't be that solid. Do you know what I mean?!? ARGHHH! HELP!!

It depends on the school. Places like MUSC and WV requested that i send in more LOR's, while places like VCU and NOVA were satisfied with the two that I had.

Is there an advantage to having more LOR's than just 3? I wouldn't think so because quality is better than quanitity in my opinion? I could get two more but I have a feeling those LOR's would be your garden variety version.

When a school says 3, you need to send 3. Your file is not complete without the given number of recs and sometimes won't be sent to admissions until it is compete.

I feel your struggle...I had one stellar recommendation that I got to read, one that was OK...I think, and one that had to have been your generic recommendation. I got into all the schools I applied to. Make sure you give your essay, resume, transcript to the person writing your recommendation. This way, they can actually personalize your letter and it won't sound too generic.
