When the time comes to get your first set of orders, if your duty station is not one of your three preferences are you stuck or can you "negotiate" a little more?

My Navy Medical Corps Recruiter mentioned that you can "refuse" orders.

As a fomer Marine, the though of "refusing" an order is a hard concept to get my mind around.

Also, is it easy to get an accompanied tour at one of the nicer Navy Hospitals overseas like in Italy, Spain, of Japan or are these billets in high demand and snapped up by people who are finishing non CONUS tours?

I definitely negotiated my current set of orders but I'm pretty sure they are "orders" and if you end up with something you didn't want...too bad. Where you go depends a great deal on your specialty (ie few subspecialists at overseas hospitals) and its hard to get to Rota regardless. One point about that, those billets used to be protected from rotations to Iraq but not anymore.

My approach to negotiation was to keep calling back to see if something had changed. My expectations weren't that high (I wanted to stay in SD, whatever the job) but it was still a process.

There are two phases in the orders process- Initially is the negotiation. That is just that - you negotiate with the detailer as to what you want and they tell you what the Navy wants. (Hopefully there is a happy medium somewhere in the middle). Just make sure whatever is on that paper you submit you would be happy to get or go to.

Once you recieve those orders and they are made official it is next to impossible to change them. You will have to serve a minimum amount of time before you can apply for a different job.

As for Rota and those other highly sought after billets - there are very few (if none) for 1rst tour GMO. You can always ask but don't expect to get it. These are easier to get as a 2nd tour GMO
