I suppose its that time of year when everyone is making their decisions, hence all the Y vs. Z threads. I do have one more, though. I've searched sdn, and looked at other sources and I am having a hard time deciding. There are threads comparing KCUMB to schools, and threads comparing DMU to schools, but none head to head.

Both seem like great schools, and I would do well at either. I'm sure it will come down to what my gut tells me. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had some advice / inside information that might make this easier. Anything would help out, thanks.

Go with your gut. Ad nauseum.

And to get info on KCUMB, search for UHS or UHS-COM.

Unfortunately, I'm right there with you. I like the curriculum set up a lot more at KCUMB, but I love the facilities and location of Des Moines so much more. I also like the fact that Des Moines isn't on a bell-curve grading scale like KCUMB and you get a laptop/PDA with admission at Des Moines. But, I want to specialize and there is a much higher percentage of students who specialize at KCUMB compared to Des Moines. Also, KCUMB is a little more expensive than Des Moines. KCUMB is closer to home, but my best friend is going to Des Moines, so I just don't know! Let me know if you get any more info comparing the two schools. Thanks!

I got accepted to both, (actually my only acceptances) and I went with DMU for the location, facilities, friendly people, non-scary neighborhood (ie. no barb wire fence around school like at UHS) and overall it just seemed a better match for me. I don't really have much to base my opinion of KCUMB on but my 1 day i spent there for interviews, but I'm still glad i picked DMU

I was accepted at both as well and have a similar opinion to the previous post. I'm originally from Iowa so DMU felt like home. The new facility is fantastic. I know multiple physicians practicing in Iowa that went to DMU and loved it. I know 2 that went into ER and are doing exceptionally well. For me it was definately a gut feel. The main driver for me not to choose KCUMB was the location. I loved everything about the school but I didn't feel safe and that was huge for me. Good luck in your decision and PM me if you have more questions!
🙂

I have only heard positive things about both schools and they were the only two that I applied to. I cancelled my interview at KCOM after my interview at DMU, because I felt like I couldn't ask for anything more. Well that is, except for a MAC option on the laptop we have to buy at the beginning of school. BOO PCs I don't envy your choice, I kinda of cancelled my interview so I wouldn't have to make one. Ah it is nice to have all that behind me. Now just to worry about where to live. Best of luck with the choosing...

First, KCUMB does not have a barbed wire fence around it. As a first year student at KCUMB I feel like the education I am recieving is second to none. The location is not the best but I have never had a problem. What KCUMB lack in location, it makes up for in terms of facilities and academics. KCUMB has a 98% board pass rate and our students have consistantly surpassed the national average. KCUMB is also very progessive. In the coming weeks we will open the first clinical research center in Kansas City. The bottom line is that you need to go to the place you feel most comfortable. I love KCUMB!

Actually, it's razor wire! Seriously, I loved what I saw on my interview day. I've definitely seen worse neighborhoods...

Well, once you get past the electrified fences, there is alot to see at KCUMB. I was looking at the match lists for both schools, and KCUMB does seem to have more specialities. I don't know if it is a much higher percentage, though. DMU actually had more matches in the field i am thinking of right now (ortho). Is there a reason for the differences? Or is that more of a year to year type of thing? I'm assuming both schools focus on primary care, so it is just the group of students that attend. either way, i guess you need to be pretty proactive.

I too had the same difficulty. I am currently a second year student at DMU. I was accepted both places too. I loved KCUMB and DMU too. I decided on DMU because the tution was lower...bottome line. I love it here; I do feel like we have a wonderful education. Our OMM department is top ranked. I feel like I could go and see any patient right now and be able to help them using my OMT skills! I guess one other thing I LOVE about DMU is that all of our lectures are recorded and we can download them to our computers and listen to them anytime. It is great if you miss class or want to hear it again. Also all of our lectures are transcibed into notes; a service you can chose to pay a fee for. But I love it. I am sure many medical schools have similar things, but these are what make DMU good in my eyes. All schools will give you a good education....its the small things you have to look at that are important to you to make your decision. No matter where you go you will end up as a fantastic D.O. one day!!

I am also an MI at KCUMB and it's great. I am an Iowan and interviewed at DMU...and seriously if you are looking for a good location KC can't get any better. I love Iowa to death but...it's Iowa. I feel completly safe at KCUMB and the other students here are great. We even share study materials and I get emails every week of a quiz/chart/table/list someone made to aid in everyone's studying. Some differences between schoos: the alumni at KCUMB are really involved (i even see and talk to M3s and residents in the book store and they love answering questions), you will know your path, systems based learning (which I love), and the professionalism code. You may not think that you will like having to dress up or wear scrubs every day but it's practicle and that's what you will have to do on the job.

best of luck in making you decision

u're right...we're all hardcore in DMU..no curve whatsoever...BUT with class averages of 84-87%..i can't imagine what a curve would do

-school doesn't push us into one direction or another as far as specialization...as the matter of fact we were just told to increase our participation in the surgery grand rounds

-beyond teaching..everyone here is serious about your sucess..out OMM teacher tells us how to do well in anatomy, our anatomy teacher suggests how we should study for biochem, 2 full psychologist are here to make sure that you stay on the path.

-school has its work together..if you go here..u're almost in for a trouble-free ride to your degree, its just your side that you have do.

aside from school decisions, I think the best advice would be to tell you that stay as close as you can to your family/friends who you can depend on.

ummm......well, thanks for the advice guys. I've already decided though. I'm your classmate, mzafaran. I wasn't sold at the beginning, but i was always leaning towards des moines. I am 100% sure that i made the right decision. i did enjoy the plaza in KC, though. when i interviewed here, the new building wasn't done, so i went by what they told me. It really is a great addition to the campus. (message to premeds: although they like to brag about the new building, it isn't the only selling point of the school)

and now for my cheezy plug
