Hello all, I'm new to this site and need advice. Even though everyone's sick of these, I want honesty. I have decided to go back to school to finish requirements and wonder if I have a shot at getting in. Quick background: undergrad (psych & comm. majors) 3.34 gpa with no science/math. I started back this year with okay prereq grades so far, and feel I can probably do about 3.6 in my sciences and hopefully get overall to 3.4. I worked two years as a pharma rep (#1 company in the world) and sold drugs for almost all body systems, so I hope that would look good on a resume. With good EC's and a decent MCAT (26-30), do I have a chance at a lower tiered school? I feel like if not I'm looking at optometry school which wouldn't be bad, but isn't my dream. Thanks.

I wouldn't be suprised if the drug rep thing backfired on you at some places. My advice: shoot higher than a 3.4/26 and apply broadly. Where is your state residency?

I got in with a 3.34 overal and a 3.1 sci, so your GPA isn't dooming you or anything. Definitely try to kick as much a** as possible in your science prereqs and I would aim a little higher with the MCAT to balance out a lower end GPA, probably 30+ evenly distributed. Also, I would DEFINITELY get some medical type volunteer and shadowing experience. The pharm rep thing isn't going to cut it as your medical experience, you need patient contact and time spent seeing what being a doctor is all about. Good :luck:

You think the drug rep thing will go against me - why? My state residency is in South Dakota, and will be doing the rest of my prereq's at USD where there is a med school. Thanks for responding.

I know a few docs that spit fire when they see a drug rep. I wouldn't be surprised if some of similar mindset are on adcoms.

psipsina, thanks for the comments. By the way, how old were you when you got in? Were you straight out of undergrad?

Being a resident of SD is a benefit since there isn't huge competition there like other states.

As for the drug rep thing, it will be a +/- many places depending on the interviewer. Get some clinical experience.
