Hello, so I've been on this forum wondering why I'm doing so bad in my classes. And I think it's because of anxiety. I am not ADHD and when my psychiatrist suggested that, I kind of walked out on him. I have the ability to concentrate behind what a normal person can, not less. I think it's because I have anxiety when it comes to school work which makes me avoid it. Does anyone else have these types of thoughts? And how do you manage them? I'm willing to start seeing a doctor, but I don't want to take any drugs which leaves me with little options.

i'm not surprised by your post...your username is "hopelessgirl"?? What type of optimism does that exude? you need more confidence!

some exams in ugrad I just walked in fully confident and even though I may not have known the answer to some of the harder questions, my confidence didn't allow me to miss the easy points...

If you're willing to see a doctor, you should go see another therapist. But don't walk out on them this time.

but also, maybe spend less time on these forums reading threads about other people freaking out!

+1. SDN is a double edged sword.

I just read someone's thread about anxiety and thought I had it.

No, but seriously I have anxiety. I can't be the only one. I worry more about my classes next year than mine right now.

you can't expect to get serious help for this over an online forum...that's the larger issue at hand. if you really think you have a psychiatric condition, please get a second opinion from a licensed physician.

I know, I will. But my school is very slow on it because so many students see them.

I think some prescription drugs will help manage your anxiety. Tell the next professional that you have problems dealing with anxiety.

....you should really let the professional who she sees decide what will help, not offer advice like this.

Are you covered under your parent's insurance? You don't have to see a professional through your school.

Uhm hence why i put next time she sees a professional.

soo next time, maybe just keep it to the part about seeing a professional? telling someone you think they could use some prescription meds isn't necessary.

Yes, but that would take even longer going though a regular doctor and then a therapist. I'll call my school tomorrow and see when the earliest is available.

I don't want to take drugs, which is why I asked for tips.

1. Go to your local gym and work out for an hour (or you can go running, walk at a brisk pace, etc). Anything that gets your heart rate going will help reduce your stress levels and ultimately your anxiety.
2. Try to dedicate some time each day in which you are immersed in peace and quiet. Even if it's just for 5 minutes or less. Put away all your technology..SDN included.
3. Talk to friends and family about this, either over the phone or face to face
4. Put away the schoolwork every once and awhile and have some fun

Anything that helps to de-stress is an automatic anxiety reducer. It may not work immediately, but doing some of these things should help in the long run.
Thank you

Five suggestions that might help you, though keep in mind this is my completely amateur opinion:

1. Meditation or yoga. If you haven't tried it before, it can be really soothing in the midst of an anxious moment. Sometimes you need a short escape from the real world to clear your mind.
2. Exercise. I need to do more of this myself, because I tend to forget that it can be incredibly stress-relieving.
3. Make sure you're getting enough sleep. I know this can be difficult if your mind is racing, but I find that I get more anxious when I am sleep deprived.
4. Cut out caffeine if you haven't already. I become an anxious wreck when I drink coffee so I avoid it.
5. If you decide you want to see someone, try to seek out a psychologist or counselor who does cognitive-behavioral therapy. I have a close friend who struggles with anxiety and they swear by the technique. It helps to identify the thought patterns that contribute to anxiety and works on solutions to change this way of thinking.

Again, I am by no means an expert, but it is certainly possible that you are coping with your anxiety by engaging in avoidance, and I do wish you luck in figuring out your own path to calmness and happiness. It is certainly possible to attain! You seem quite driven and you deserve to be happy and succeed, so don't forget that!
