From what I've seen academic onc's do some research and do some clinic, and can do so with single board certification (onc usually) vs doube (heme/onc).

1. Do most of these onc's do bench work or clinical trials and is one usually preferred by institutions?

2. whats the common break-up of clinic / and research hours during the week

3. do they have the same call responsibilities

4. I know salary is lower - but can't find any academic specific ones on medscape

mucho thanks

1. Lab-based researcher: bigger upfront investment for institution, higher reward long term. Most of the salary of most academic docs is paid for by their clinic.
2. Varies, from a half-day to 4 days of clinic per week. It depends how much of your salary is based upon your clinic.
3. Generally less, unless it is a small department or hospital.
4. Yes. If you divide earners into quartiles (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%), academics is usually about the first quartile [25 - 30%]. However, this varies by geography and institution - the elite departments in expensive cities tend to give less favorable salary packages.
