I flunked step 1. I was feeling real down for some time, but i think i will work hard and am sure will get a decent score next time. Anyone out there can plz tell me how taking step 1 twice affects ur match chances. I have heard lots of hospitals dont even consider ur application if u have taken step 1 more than once. Can anyone please enlighten me on this subject? I would greately appreciate it.Good luck for all studying for step 1.I hope to stay focused, stay alive and fight on....
hope springs eternal

You are not the only person in the world who has failed the USMLE, cheer up, study and focus on it.

I am taking it for the second time also, when I failed it was a nightmare, I was always an A student and my undergrad gpa was 3.9, but I am an IMG, the school did not teach us in the format of the usmle testing style. The education at the school in the carribean where I studied did not teach us for the boards. So we just do it ourselves. There are plenty of resources.

One of the girls in my class made a score of 148, she studied with a study group and retook the exam, she passed with a 240....wow.

Do not worry about the matching, there is a place for all of us. If you really want to practice as a doctor then let the disappointment go and start studying. You can do it:clap:

S4L is correct. Don't let it get you down. There are always spots out there...

But in regards to your question, does it really matter? Say you wanted to do... Surgery... would failing Step 1 make you not want to apply to surgery programs? Just apply anyways. Do your best, apply, and interview. Who knows what residency programs look at... I don't think its the kiss of death if you make a decent grade the second time around.

Its just a test. Not the end of your life. Just keep chugging on and do not change any direction in your life based on this one test.

hi,
thanx for the advice.Actually i am also an img and never went through the format of usmle till only after i graduated medical school. I actually hope to get a decent score next time. Actually am mostly interested in applying to a nonsurgical residency, especially medicine or psychiatry. Anyone out there about any gud university-based programs that dont give importance to any-attempt business, please let me know. Again, best of luck to all.
