i'm headed to albany this fall. thanks for starting this thread, it would be great to hear from others that have albany in their futures.

as far as housing goes, i'm just beginning to look into it... so far, i've noticed that albany boasts of an extremely low cost of living, and roomming with someone always helps too.

I've decided not to go to Albany in favor of my state school, but I really enjoyed interviewing there. People were sooo friendly.

Have you checked out www.roommateservice.com?
It's a nationwide search service (oh yeah, it's FREE)

im going to albany this fall. :)

im from cali and i cant wait to become a new yorker  (check out my profile)

anyone else is moving across country? i was thinking of taking a short trip a month before school and finding an apartment. anyone care to join me?

hey i'm from a suburb outside of albany, i'm not premed (i'm predent), but just thought I'd tell you...if you want to live close to albany med, you'll find the cost of living to be relatively cheap. The weather is kinda dreary, but there are some good bars...and you'll be 3hrs from NYC< 3hrs from Boston, 3hrs from Montreal.

i'm accepted to albany and thought there were good chances that's the place I would go to... but I'm probably gonna go to SLU over Albany (until I get any other acceptances). Are any of you choosing Albany over another particular school, and why is this? I personally just couldn't see myself living in Albany in the middle of nowhere with the horrible weather. No offense intended towards the school of course, I thought my visit there was great.

I'm still waiting on 2 other schools, but I really liked Albany a lot when I was there. I think their curriculum is awesome (organ-based) and the people were so friendly. I kind of like the small-town feel, plus I don't want too many distractions in med school (but it's not too far from big cities in case you want to get away). I think it's partly a gut feeling too.

Good luck with your decision.

i agree with smileyface. the curriculum was what really sold me on albany. also, the students i met on interview day attested to the collegial, supportive atmosphere and availability of the profs. while albany itself may be "dreary," the location is good for me: 4 hrs from home, 3 hrs from nyc and boston, and <2 hrs from great skiing!

Awesome!! i'm headed to albany and was just about to try to get into contact with fellow albany sdners. hey CU, i'm from cali also. berkeley actually. i was intending on going out there early to check out housing too. perhaps we can arrange something. do any of you know of any single apartments? when i was there, it seemed like there weren't any apartment buildings, just big houses where people rent out rooms. do any of you know any different?

also, when's orientation and school? have any of you received anything aside from financial aid since your acceptance?

Hey everybody! As far as I know, orientation starts on Aug. 28th. But you might want to double-check with the office. I'm from DC, so I will definitely be heading up to Albany over the summer...will you let me know when you're going to be there? I would love to meet other people in the class and search for places to live. When do you think would be too late to find an apartment?

smileyface: hey smileyface, have no fear cuz your future classmates are here. i was thinking of going there and starting my search sometime in july. we should all try and go there at the sametime, it would make things much more fun. when were you thinking of going?

dynamite: check your profile :)

Hello all...just wanted to let you know that I'm gonna head up to Albany for a super-quick visit on May 14th. I will let you all know any info that I can get about housing. I'm also gonna call the office and see when they suggest to start looking, so maybe we can all meet up there over the summer.

Not to sound too "forward" but...I don't know if you are guys or girls, but if anybody's (either male or female is fine with me) interested in having a roommate, let me know. My name is Tal...I'm a girl, by the way. Feel free to email me (it's on my profile) if you want. Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

You guys can e-mail the "Housing" people that was included in the acceptance packet. I actually contacted them already just to see what type of housing was available in Albany, and they sent me a FAT packet of available apartments, and listings of roomates, etc. I'm sure you guys should try that out before just driving there. I did notice, however, that lots of the apartments included in the packet were kinda old listings. Anyways, check it out! Wow, I'm feeling left out now that I'm not going to Albany and I hear all you guys so excited about it

Turning down albany was probably my hardest choice, I went to graduate school there and loved the people (particularly faculty and students). However, I will give some living advice and costs for all you out of the area....
my first year of grad school, they have a roommate listing book which is pretty good, however, I did find myself a psycho roommate (althouh I meet many who lived with the people they found for four years) cost for a 3 bedroom is about $500-$700 (no heat included) the area around albany med we use to joke is the albany med student slums...cheap housing which is acceptable not glamerous. My 2-5th years of grad school, I rent a 2 bedroom including heat for $450, some years I had roommates, some years I did not. Couple of ways to find places, the books in the student affairs office (however, many of these apartments tend to have slum lords), walking or driving around the area, or the timesunion is not bad (I found the later apartment that way), older students sometimes post on a buleton (sp?) board down by the bookstore. Roommates can be tricky to find...if you are looking in the fall many times you can find a roomate easily the rest of the year can be a crap shoot. The most fun place to live is probably down by lark street, however, it is very difficult at times (particularly during the day and late at night) to find parking....

One more thing, do not rush and buy all your books immediately, there is a used book sale fun by the students which is much cheaper...you also can not return books to that bookstore...and one more thing...do not buy books for inside the anatomy lab, there is an enormous supply from previous years (netters, grants, rohen and disecting manuals)!

hi CU, i sent you a PM.

hi, everyone! i've had difficulty with my computer, so i haven't been able to post recently. in any case, i am going to albany this weekend (5/10), and will be sure to share any info i come back with. smileyface: i am also in the dc area; maybe it would be fun to get in touch before we go to school this fall?

hey Im at albany, 3rd year next year...whoohoo! can't wait to not have to sit and study every fricken day

anyhow.

go to the office of student affairs or call them they will send you roommate stuff. otherwise if you come early you can probably stay with a current student and look for housing. people here are cool like that.

Has anyone heard of a second look weekend? Or does albany not offer such a thing?

Howdy everyone!

Albany doesn't have a second weekend thing. I should be getting that packet of info about housing in a couple days, so I'll let you know when they recommend to start looking, and maybe we can find a weekend during the summer that's good for everyone.

Do you think you need a car for med school up there? Anybody heard anything?

savoy, i sent you a PM

smileyface: i've pm-ed you back :)

hey guys,

i just got an email from AMC saying that our tuition has been raised for this year. dang! med school is EXPENSIVE!@@

have any of you received your financial aid packages yet? i'm just wondering if i'm really behind.

Haven't got my financial packet yet. I sent it in late january. Has anyone received theirs?

just want to say congrats to all of you going to Albany

they offered to interview me, but the offer came so late (got into one of my state schools and have my financial aid lined up plus its a lot cheaper than out of state) that I had to decline. But I was really tempted to go because the school is very decent. Go Albany!

Yeah, that new tuition of theirs is FRIGHTENING! At least living is cheap!

I haven't gotten any financial aid stuff either...I'm sure it's on its way!

Ooops...sent that twice...

hi! just wanted to let y'all know that i just got back from a weekend in albany. there are many nice places to live; tons of beautiful brownstones right on washington park (they were having their annual "tulip festival," so the park was packed.) it was fun to go back to the school as an accepted applicant :) let me know if you have any questions, i'll be happy to share any info...

Hi fellow Albany-goers!
I can't wait to meet you all in August.
Savoy, I am trying to figure out when I should find an apartment. Did you sign a lease? When were most of the apartments available? I want to move in around August 1st. Do you think I could just find an apartment then, or should I fly up sometime in June? Did you make appointments to see apartments before you got there? I would appreciate any info you have. Thanks!

hi, old lady

i was going to write this in a private message to you, then decided that some of this info might be helpful to others. i did not make any appointments before i went, and have not signed anything yet. i was there with my parents, and we just drove around the neighborhoods near the school (i would like to be w/in walking distance, although i will have a car) and wrote down the #'s of places for rent. unfortunately, since we were there over mother's day weekend, we were not able to get into as many places as we might have liked. however, i have spoken with several landlords. many places are available now, some will be opening up in june/july, and i also know of some opening in august. i really don't think it will be hard to find a place any time you go (i get the feeling that albany typically is a "renter's" market, if that makes sense.) there are also a bunch of people looking for roommates with or without apartments (the student affairs office will provide you with the list, and you can add your own name as well.) i don't want to make any strong recommendations one way or the other about when to look (i have a tendancy myself to try to figure things like housing out early--hense, my trip this past weekend. but i really think you'll be able to find a place anytime...)

i hope this is at least mildly helpful. i have a couple of landlords phone #'s; if you're interested, i can pass those on to you.

Does anyone know the exact date class starts? Orientation?

yeah that's a very good question. i havent heard a thing from them.

i think i heard that orientation is around 8/28 and classes begin in early september....

can anyone confirm that?

yeah, i just called them. orientation is 8/28-29 (wed and thurs, although it may run into fri am). then we have a 3-day weekend, and classes begin tues morning (9/3)

bump, so who is finally decided on albany?

i'll be there for sure

smileyface, are you going?

dukee--are you going to be at albany?

Hey everyone...

Sorry that I didn't write sooner, but I actually decided not to go to Albany. It was a very last-minute decision, but I got into Georgetown recently, and I think it's a better fit for me. I think Albany's a great school, though, and I wish you guys the best of luck. :D

hi everyone,

i am resurrecting this post b/c i am wondering if anyone is looking for a place to live. i have an apartment and am looking for a roommate. i have no preference male/female. i am a female, but spent the last 3 years with a male roommate. i should mention, though, that the apartment is furnished... if anyone is interested in hearing more about the apartment, please pm me.

thanks!

ps also wondering if anyone knows anything about orientation schedule? i'm not getting mail right now, so if they've sent anything out, i haven't gotten it
