Hi-

If you're from berkeley, this question is for you:

For those going to the east coast , did you have to take chem 1b or is chem 1a enough?

thanks!

I went to Cal, but didn't apply to any east coast schools. According to the career center, all schools should be aware of the chem sequence. If there is a problem, I think they can write you a letter. You just have to make sure if you take chem 1a, you also take chem 3a, 3b, and either mcb 100 or 102. Otherwise, if you take chem 1a and chem 1b, then you have to take chem 112a/b instead of 3a/3b.

I was an MCB major, took chem 1a, 3a, 3b, and mcb 100. Never had any trouble during the app process.

crazy sherm is right. As long as you take the prereqs recommended by the career center then you will be fine. No need to take chem 1b. I know plenty of people from Cal who have followed this path and didn't have any problems while applying.

I agree with what the others have said. But looking back at my AADSAS application, I actually put chem3a and chem3b as "o-chem" and chem 1a, ph270c, & ph172 as "inorganic chem". Some schools want to see that you've taken Biochemistry (ie. UCLA) so I reserved mcb102 for that. I didn't have any problems with my application or none that I'm aware of. You shouldn't have a problem whichever way you classify since the d-schools are very aware of the Berkeley "chemistry issue". So no chem1b needed. I don't know ANYONE who's taken that class.

My suggestion: Check with the schools you're applying to, asking whether or not Biochemistry is one of the pre-reqs. Also, schedule a mini-appt with the Career Center to clarify in person any burning Q's. They're really nice.

G-luck. :luck:
