Damn I wish I had found this site a while ago. It would've made my entire process a lot smoother. Good advice on here. Saw a thread asking 'bout black female pre-meds and I see the sistas representing...so I'm tryna see if any brothas in the house!!!

Tennessee is checking in, I'm in the middle of my application process right now, OP where are you from.

Good to see the brothas comin' up. I'm from Brooklyn, NY but I live in Maryland now. How far are you in the process? I took Aug 2005 MCAT, did so-so, and because one of my transcripts got held up...my AMCAS wasn't verified till Nov 30(!). So needless to say my secondaries went out mid December. I was lucky to get 5 interview requests though, but only went on one of them so far and the rest are in Feb.
The one interview was at Maryland and there were NO brothas, so just checking to make sure I'm not out here alone

Whats up fellas.

I was going to start this thread several times, but I always got side tracked. I'm still interviewing (got 2 more to do so far - still waiting on requests). I've gotten 2 down - one with an acceptance!! I also took my MCAT in Aug 2005. I'm from MS, living in St. Louis right now. You are not alone. I interviewed with another blk guy at one of my schools. I also go to school with 4 or 5 applying (all accepted) this year.

Good to see y'all doing it up big. Congratulations man. Where did you get accepted to? and where are your next interviews? Mine are all coming up in Feb:
1)Howard
2)SUNY Downstate
3)Morehouse
4)GW

Finally the black male premed thread... we are like an endangered species on sdn (jk). Well, I have one interview to go, three down, and an acceptance. Good luck all with upcoming interviews. Let’s keep this thread going!

Had 5 interviews down with acceptance and a couple coming in Feb. and yeah Supa, have not met any brodas at any of my interviews. Met a couple of sistas tho'. Was the only black at my MD interview last week...Ummm couldn't help to notice dat.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to make this thread. Whatup fellas? Anyway, Im pretty much done with the process. I will most likely be going to U. Kentucky, unless I get into ECU(so cheap for in state). Keep your heads up and dont lose confidence.

oh yea
Interviewed:
ECU(still waiting)
Morehouse(waitlist, oh well I dont like the idea of class from 8:30-4)
U. Kentucky(accepted)

Interview invite/declined:
Meharry

The only Interview I have had with black males was at Morehouse...and even there the black females outnumber the black males.

It’s about time we got our own thread 🙂 … Right now I am preparing for the April MCAT and, I will be applying for the class of 2011…

Good luck to all of you in the process

NewtonBohr,
Goodluck on your MCAT prep man. In case of any info about the process, feel free to post on here. Quite a few of us have been thru and could throw in something if need arises. Again Goodluck.

Look at everyone with their acceptances!!! Damn I'm proud o' y'all. Glad to see everybody coming out to represent. I graduated from Howard University in 2003, now I work in Maryland. Like I said I wish I had found this site a long tim ago cuz I made a lotta mistakes in the process. But by the grace of God I got a few interviews and 1 acceptance so far. Hope everyone does well also, cuz you know we need more of us in medicine. If anyone has interviews at Morehouse, GW, Downstate, or Howard just get at me on PM

Whoever made the joke that black males are like endangered species wasn't kidding. I have rarely met any other black guy at my interviews (except for one). Oh well. I am glad to see this post. I had questions that pertained to black males in medicine, but just couldn't find the right venue to ask. As for me,

I applied to 10 schools ( U of chicago, Harvard, UCSF, UCLA, UCirvine, UCdavis, Upenn, Temple, Northwestern, and Yale)

Interviewed at all of them (declined interview at UCirvine, UC davis)

Currently accepted at : UCSF, Northwestern, U of Chicago, and Temple. I should be hearing from UCLA, Yale and Harvard in the nearest future.

Keep up the good work fellas. I hope more black male will start utilizing the vast resource made available by the infamous SDN.

Thanks 👍 🙂

Absolutely had to check in, Originally from Georgia, currently a second semester sophomore at Alabama A&M University, and a promising future physician of course. It is nice to know that I'm not the only young black male pre-med. My school is overwhelmed with female pre-med's.

👍 Damn, it is great this thread was finally made. No joke about the black male pre-med being damn near non-existant. I've probably met 5 others total in four years here at school. Glad to see the brothas representing. Have three interviews total at this point, one already done in early January, with the other two in February. Best of luck to you all and I'll definitely keep checking in.

For all of you with late interviews(and those who have yet to go through the process), it is a good idea to keep calling schools to try to reschedule an interview for an earlier date. A lot of the time they have open slots from people cancelling or various other reasons. I did this at all of the schools that I actually attended the interview.

Slow down Infinity...you killing 'em. Good advice Marz

Wassup yall. I took the August 2005 MCAT, but I'm a Junior, so I'm applying this upcoming summer. And its true, you are more likely to see a black female at a interview than a black male. That just means that we have to make it so it will inspire more black males that they can make it also. As the only black guy on SDN Diaries (premed diary), I would really like your support. Good luck with everything!

Funny, it's quite the opposite here (Canada). All of the black attendings/residents I've seen so far were male. The only female I know is in my class (2nd year). 1-2 males in the other classes though.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know excatly how many black males actually apply every year. I have heard conflicting numbers.

Sup fellas,

I've seen this thread, but yet to check in.

I just want to send love to all the black males considering medicine or already in medicine. It seems like we are the only ones that realize that there are not many of us in medicine. The AAMC stats are pretty grim. When you go on the interview tour for med school it is all too obvious. But, from what I have experienced thus far in my journey, there is nothing but solidarity among brothas in medicine. I think this is a good sign for the future. We all know that medicine is an "ol' boys club." This means we've got to look out for those of us up in coming through the ranks whether it be high school, pre-med, med school, residency and beyond. Younger guys, don't be afraid to reach out to the older guys about anything. Older guys, you should always be looking for ways to mentor the younger guys. It is really the only way for the situation to get better. Best wishes to everyone wherever you may be in your medical training. Most definitely keep your eyes on the prize.

Real talk. Couldn't have said it better. Congrats on the acceptance by the way.

Black male "to be" med student 2010 checking in. I just found this thread.
Good jobs guys with the post.

Yo nice to see the fellowship. I'm a M1 and I must say that in my class there are 5 brothas in my class of 185 and thats deep. But once your in, do what you gotta do and get out. First year sucks (just reading all day everyday, but the material is interesting and necessary!) Good luck to all you guys and keep ya head up

Same here fellas. Although I am still early in the game (like 4 minutes left in the 1st quarter, lol), Jaysson and you guys have been a tremendous inspiration.

At our last Pre-Med club meeting on my campus, there were 3 black females and I was the only black male. I wonder why are other black men shunning this profession? I had ambitions to start a Black Pre-Med Club, but with those numbers, I can foresee that being a futile effort. Any schools here representing any prolific Black Pre-Med Clubs? I may need your help.

Yeah.. we have a very strong BPM Society (40+ members) at a predominately white institution. What do you need help with?

I'm not, but I'm looking for one. 😉 LOL. PharmD(2b) + MD sounds good to me. I see a couple of you are in my "neck of the woods" ANYWAY:
Congrats, guys! I'm always glad to see brothas doing it big! 😀

congrats to all those who have been accepted... 🙂 👍 The real fun begins now 🙄

Ahhhhhhh hell to the nawww!!!! We got our own thread now?!?! I used to crash the female joint every now and then, but it's time to get it crunk up in this thread :meanie: Congrats on all the acceptances family 👍 It's true our numbers are looking kinda ugly up in the medical game, but we on the come up. I'll be hittin up UT-Memphis this August... gotta keep da dirty on lock 😎 Anywayz though, ya'll hold it down. Hopefully this thread can be just as successful as the ones our sistas got going. We gotta support each other no doubt

gostudy

Congrats on your acceptance in TX man. Keep moving bros.

Need a bit of advice... I don't know what to do this summer (before entering Med school as an M1). It's nice to have the option of sitting at home doing absolutely nothing, but I honestly can't afford to do that. Does anyone know of anything that requires no thinking that pays? Heh... I know it may be asking for a lot, but I'm not lifting ONE book (or journal article) this summer. I need help..

BTW, I'll have my engineering degree in May, so maybe that'll add more options..

I can't think of anything that doesn't require too much thinking. Maybe becoming a waiter (If you are a guy you will have to think about becoming flirtateous to get the tips from the ladies). LOL. I think you should find something you enjoy. That way, thinking will be a lot of fun.

oh! Congratulations, Whatupdoc and others! One of my good friends just recieved his acceptance as well. So as of now, I know about ten black males accepted to medical school. Keep the numbers coming!

What's up Family...!!

Yow whats up fellas? nice to see tha brothas holding it down. I just got accepted in Texas so I give God thanks for that. I also have a Howard acceptance, but I may stay in Texas due to cheaper tuition. Well, I wish everyone the best in their admission process... hope you get in the school of your choice. And remember, lets encourage the younger black premeds to stick it through when the going gets tough.

One love,

Jcan
