You shouldn't! Fresno always needs the residents. They only filled 9 of their 13 internal medicine spots last year.

yeah, but who wants to live in fresno? no offense to central valley residents, but i really prefer to be closer to the coast.

Oh, I see it's all about underserved populations UNTIL you have the MD. Fresno funds its residents really well (and there's a very cheap cost of living!) There are lots of loan payback programs here too. And it is UCSF...

Did I ever say it's all about underserved populations? NO! Of course I plan to help the underserved/poor. However, I also plan to live somewhere where I'll be happy. My cousin is currently doing his residency in Fresno. That's great, but it would not be one of my top choices.

I want to devote my medical career to underserved/poor populations, definitely, so I think California would be ideal for that. Are there any residencies in Beverly Hills by the way?

hahaha. i said, "california". not boonies. i'm talking SoCal, or maybe SF if i'm feeling generous when i say California. and more specifically, places with beach breaks and warmer waters.

haha. mr. annoying. hahaha. i don't now about you guys, but many of my buddies are residents or graduating...and they are sooo disillusioned, disgruntled, and jaded. they went from wanting to "help people" people, to "how do i find out which residency has the best hrs, best pay, and least stress?". hahahaa.

and dude. BH has a LOT of underserved. like, all the people that can't get botox and plastics b/c daddy could only afford the Benz this year.

haha. but really tho'.
california residencies. anyone worried or anyone have confidence in their school to get them to where they want?????

Well I am from SoCal but go to NUMS (chicago) and was worried about getting a residency (gen surg) in SoCal. I was concerned because although a lot of the faculty at NUMS are well known, they aren't well known in CA so i am going to do an away rotation here this summer to get my face known and get some letters from SoCal faculty to boost my chances of residency.

hhmmm...interesting.

have you expressed any of your concerns to Northwestern? is the adimn/faculty helpful in gettin students to other states that they want to go to? (i remember my interview at EVMS...the speaker said he worked in AZ, CA, and VA...and had connections/hook-ups at those states, etc, etc...benefits of a smaller school, come to EVMS).

and i wonder if it's different if you go to a public school, who want their students to serve in that particular state???

I'm worried too about getting back into the golden state :)

I am dedicating my medical profession to helping the poor and underserved populations that inhabit Hawaii!!!!!!!!

Right now I'm worried about getting back to the other side of Los Angeles.

But really, knowing people where you do your residencies help. My friend who is a residency director says that they really like the people who have done rotations in his hospital when looking to fill their residencies, so all Ties go to the UCLA/USC peopel.

gettin some backside from LA? dude, no doubt! David Lee Roth....i wish they all could be california gurls! i hope you get some backside.

It is hard to get residencies in California, but not impossibly hard. Coming from a school with many Cali transplants, many people did get back. However, in general the Cali residencies are more competitive than their quality merits so getting into a top Cali programs is harder than top programs in other parts of the country. So you need to work your butt off, especially if you deciede to go into a competitive specialty. I would agree that having some face-to-face time on away rotations can help. Good luck and give other cities a chance, maybe you'll fall in love with Virginia.

Don't come to San Francisco, you'll be miserable if you want to return to CA for the "beach breaks and warmer waters." You'd be more likely to get them in Florida or Texas. The city was a typical summer temperature of 54 today. The rest of the Bay Area (boonies? I think not) was 70s to 80s.

hehe, i, like jalbrekt, will try to work my way to the other side of la... closer to santa monica =) when i went to my interview, my friend took me to santa monica... i hope the girls didn't notice my jaw dragging along the ground =)

You might be disappointed in Fresno as well if you're expected Southern CA.

I am relatively confident that I can get residency in CA. Right now, I definitely want to come back. Being in CA may even override the desire to want a top program. Things look good..my school did very well in getting CA ppl to match back in CA this year. I am still going to be working real hard in school to increase my chances. Also, I plan on doing almost all my fourth year rotations back in CA. A friend of mine that just finished her residency at UCLA said she did just one at UCLA - she was from NYU.
