I am from Canada, thinking of attending Saba but I want to do family medicine residency in Canada. Anyone done this?

Was just wondering if anyone had any issues, or how to go about doing this, and if it was hard.

Scheduling electives is hard enough, let alone getting letter of rec, and this whole process is ridiculous.

That's why I went to the States. NO point going back.

Plenty ppl have done this.

While this is certainly true that plenty of people have matched, its important for the OP to know is the rates. Currently in the IMG stream, the match rate is an abysmal 10-20% depending on the year.

In addition, many of these IMG residency slots have contracts associated with them to work in a rural area for a number of years. Furthermore, although there are IMGs who match some great residencies, those that match to great residencies are very rare when you look at the numbers.

Do not PLAN to match into family medicine or any specialty in Canada...Even if you work very hard and it will still be very difficult. Just trying to let you know the hill ahead of you. It can be done, but just look at the CaRMS statistics and it will be very telling.

My advice is to hold off on attending SABA right now and reapply to Canada and the US next cycle. This will give you a much better chance of returning to Canada, or for that matter a better chance at becoming a fully liscenced physician. Remember things are getting more competitive every year in the US and Canadian matches.

You need to be a bit more specific. Are you:

A) a fully qualified physician licensed to practice in your own country? If yes, what country and what is your specialty?

B) a Canadian citizen / PR studying medicine abroad?

If A), then you can contact the recruiters in rural / remote areas (e.g. northern Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, rural Newfoundland, NB, etc. etc.) They're usually desperate for physicians (particularly family med types trained in western Europe or S. Africa), and will try to work with you to get you a provisional license to work in Canada.

If B), then you need to apply for residency training through CaRMS (see carms.ca). The match rate for IMGs through CaRMS is low (around 20%), so you would be advised to apply to EVERY open residency position that you find acceptable (e.g. do not limit yourself to positions you think will be less competitive). Be advised that there is a ROS contact attached.

The return of service agreement is rapidly becoming less restrictive. In Ontario, you can work anywhere that's not Toronto or Ottawa even as a specialist when before all specialists had to be in Northern Ontario. Even so, there are people completing their ROS in Toronto as we speak. I wouldn't be surprised if one day there will be no restrictions at all.

Actually the ROP is becoming more restrictive. According to the map they put out every year of areas the none of the GTA is considered to be available. No Oakville, Mississauga, Brampton.
