Any chance this is tax deductible?

Nope. Some "career-related" expenses can be tax deductible--such as expenses related to job interviews--but my understanding is that the expenses have to be for your current field, not to train in a new field. My understanding is also that residency interview/application costs can be tax deductible for this reason, not that most people have an income they are being taxed on when they are applying for residencies (I guess married people filing jointly with a working spouse might find this useful). If anyone knows any different, feel free to contribute.

*Edit: here is a link to the IRS policy for deducting business-related travel expenses, including interview expenses. It explicitly states that you can only deduct these expenses for work in your current profession, not a new one. Since none of us are currently doctors, I don't think you can deduct them.

Yes, I believe that they are tax-deductible as educational expenses (like tuition, etc.) However, if you are already deducting your tuition, you have probably maxed out your deduction already and won't be able to deduct anything additional.

Agreed. Trying to get a job in the field in which you are already employed is deductible (to some extent), but, nope, trying to get into schools is not on the IRS list. At least right now you can deduct (or take a credit for) some of your tuition. Also, for now you can deduct student loan interest. See why I want to change careers, desperately!!!

Darn. Thanks for all the info.

This is correct. Job interviews, relocation, etc are....but unfortunately not this junk.

i spent a little over $10,000 last cycle, and didn't get in anywhere. it would have been nice to get a little of that back from uncle sam, but alas, he too has no pity on me...
