I have a Palestinian friend, a great cook . Once cooked chicken for me. He has started his own restaurant - pretty good food and till today, always says hi to me! Nice guy

Seriously though, with the term "desi" gaining more and more popularity, don't you guys think it should be listed as a race on surveys? I mean, there's like 5 different types of hispanic races you can check off, and then there's always one Asian/Pacific Islander box. With 1 out of 8 people in the world being of South Asian descent, I think we need our own category.

desi comes from desh (country=hindi word) i think? so hence desi can be south indians too

yeah my bad, i just asked my brother in law, he said that all indians can be desi. it used to mean like old fashioned, but in the US it just means indians in general.

all brown people from the south asian area can be called desi, not just indians

The word "desi" itself finds its roots in villages where people used it in various references (desi hawa, desi ghee, etc etc). Out here in the US however, it has been used to describe pakis/indians/bangladeshis etc etc (sorry if i left out the other major ones).

oh and the UC schools have an "asian indian/pakistani" ethnicity category on their undergrad apps - I guess cuz theres so many of us in the UC system...
