) Cuban here! Do I count even though I'm not pre-med? 😉baylormed said:I just haven't come across any. Where are you guys?

drlatina said:Unfortunately I haven't seen or met other hispanics on the road to med school. In fact, fellow hispanics have alwas been scarce in my acedemic life; private elementary, high school, and college life. Even now in the academic research field, I feel like a loner. We're the fastest growing minority, but you'd never know it looking at the academic arena. 🙁
At least this thread can give me a little hope for our future.

It's nice to see more Cubans at UMiami medical school. My class hardly has any.xxwildbeanerxx said:Mexicana/Spanish here 🙂.
Father is from Barcelona, Mother from Chihuahua! 🙂

And Ditto to all those comments about the scarcity of hispanics among the medical profession! I have encountered few who are serious about it, and even then, most of them have been born and raised here in the US by parents that were also born and raised here.
I'm first generation (been here less than 5 years), and I want to encourage others who think it isn't possible!
Keep it coming!
drlatina said:I am also first generation(born & raised), and now I know ONE other who is also interested in the medical field. Being first generation is hard. Unless you're parents had some sort of professional career before they came to the states, the majority were relegated to blue collar work, as mine were, and still are 28 years later. I've noticed that others in my situation haven't been as fortunate as me with education, but I don't know if that's a lack of opportunity, misdirection by parents, or just a general unconsious belief that they, for what ever reason, can't do better.
Also, I'm really getting tired of the stereo types that we're all gardners, houskeepers, and maintenance workers. Do you know how many times I've been asked at the local grocery stores or walmart if I work there, while I'm wearing SCRUBS?! TOO MANY!! I'm wearing scrubs! When did that translate into stock girl?
