Any Hispanic pre-meds out there????

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hola chica. There are plenty of Latinos/Latinos on SDN...we just lurk sometimes and blend in. ROLL CALL!

Word 👍

although I'm pretty pale, so you probably wouldn't be able to tell if it weren't for my latin booty

Haha, hey, not all of us are dark!!
You wouldn't be able to tell if it weren't for the fact that I want to eat chilaquiles and enchiladas every day, or that I speak Spanish when I talk to my parents, lol...anyway, I'm glad to see you guys are out there.

Im not hispanic, but I do speak pretty good spanish, and Ive sometimes been mistaken as one!! 🙂

i'm brown, i like tacos, and i speak a pre-school level of spanish. can i join this club? No? oh ok.

dammit.

Hello,
yeah, I really want to get into BCM, but my name refers to my undergrad institution, Baylor University.
I'm just hoping one day it'll refer to the med school i'm attending.

Puerto Rico in the house! 🙂

Cuban yeah! we're the reason 😍 George W. 😍 is president!

Latina here. Pale, but I got the booty to prove it, too. 😛

Ah 🙁 , too bad I wasn't blessed with the booty.

A soon to be doctor (4 months away  ) Cuban here! Do I count even though I'm not pre-med? 😉

I just haven't come across any. Where are you guys?

I'm Hispanic and Pre-Med, but I don't really speak a lot of Spanish. I know how to say basic stuff, and I can order tacos in Spanish from a taco stand. I think that counts! 🙂 By the way, my name's DentalGal b/c I'm applied to both med and dent school this year, and I found this forum through the dental posts first. So there ya go.

Hey everyone, I'm from Nicaragua and I will be attending the Medical University of Ohio in August. I am glad there are some of us out there, keep it up!

Any fellow Ecuadorians out there?

and don't worry about not having the booty, baylormed...it took years of insecurity before I was able to embrace it 🙂

Glad to see we have some presence, I was starting to get lonely. Unfortunately I haven't seen or met other hispanics on the road to med school. In fact, fellow hispanics have alwas been scarce in my acedemic life; private elementary, high school, and college life. Even now in the academic research field, I feel like a loner. We're the fastest growing minority, but you'd never know it looking at the academic arena. 🙁
At least this thread can give me a little hope for our future.

ps PLease share the booty!

If you were a chicano doctor would you get Dr. CHAVEZ written across the back window of your van or would you just stick with CHAVEZ?

Ditto. I was contemplating the same phenomena when I was interviewing for OB/GYN residency positions in top programs (Brigham, Hopkins, Duke, Yale, Mayo, etc). I was always the only latina in the room. I felt so alienated...maybe that's why I was so turned off by most of these programs. 🙁

Congrats!! It's nice to see more Cubans at UMiami medical school. My class hardly has any.

Mexicana/Spanish here 🙂.

Father is from Barcelona, Mother from Chihuahua! 🙂

Hey there, my mom is from Chihuahua, too!! Oh, how I love visiting and filling my stomach with all that food that's really, really bad for you...

And Ditto to all those comments about the scarcity of hispanics among the medical profession! I have encountered few who are serious about it, and even then, most of them have been born and raised here in the US by parents that were also born and raised here.
I'm first generation (been here less than 5 years), and I want to encourage others who think it isn't possible!
Keep it coming! 👍

Mexicana here! UTHSC San Antonio Class of 2010!!

Probably just CHAVEZ in that nice Old English lettering. 🙂 I've never seen one with Dr. on it. That might be interesting!

I am also first generation(born & raised), and now I know ONE other who is also interested in the medical field. Being first generation is hard. Unless you're parents had some sort of professional career before they came to the states, the majority were relegated to blue collar work, as mine were, and still are 28 years later. I've noticed that others in my situation haven't been as fortunate as me with education, but I don't know if that's a lack of opportunity, misdirection by parents, or just a general unconsious belief that they, for what ever reason, can't do better.
Also, I'm really getting tired of the stereo types that we're all gardners, houskeepers, and maintenance workers. Do you know how many times I've been asked at the local grocery stores or walmart if I work there, while I'm wearing SCRUBS?! TOO MANY!! I'm wearing scrubs! When did that translate into stock girl?

I totally agree with you!!! I think the problem is not lack of resources (because this country has them). I think it's just some people never learned to push themselves and their families don't expect anything from them beyond completing high school and maybe getting a tech degree so they can make a "decent" living.

I work in the school cafeteria and I can't tell you how many times I have been looked down by other people (yeah, i'm sick of it, but I need to work and they pay me better than any other on-campus job). Or I have been browsing through my school bookstore and I get asked if I work there. Or how many people are surprised I'm a bio major w/ two minors and that I make dean's list. All these low societal expectations have a major role in a lot of people's lives.
I remember my school counselor did not really expect any of the newly-arrived immigrants to go beyond community college. She didn't believe me when I told here I already spoke decent-if-not-perfect English and put me in bilingual program anyway (I got out a month later, thanks to my teacher). She "forgot" to tell me I needed to take SAT's and TAAS. Thank goodness I'm paranoid and inquisitive, or I would have never found out on time.
I just hope when I'm a doctor wearing scrubs I don't get confused with a nurse or someone might get hurt (just kidding, just kidding)

latina and proud. 🙂 😎 😉

I am not Latino, but really like the culture. As for the booty thing, you should be proud of yourself. LOL. Hopefully, there will be some latino/as at the school I attend this september!

Glad to see that there are other Puerto Ricans applying to med school 😛)
Do consider applying to Stanford 🙂

Pura Brasileira. I have yet to meet another Brazilian in my school that's in my major, or many hispanics for that matter. Kind of disappointing. Perhaps I will run into some of you fellow latinos in med school. 🙂
