*any ideas on (can't edit the title oops!)

I will be starting at a US med school in August of this year. I've decided to spend the summer (June 1-August 1) in London, where I have a lot of friends. I have sent a few inquiries to physicians with interesting research, but I was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions on how I can find something constructive to do in London this summer? Or has anyone heard of anyone who needs help? I'd consider anything medicine-related, be it public health, research, help in a practice, etc.

Hey, final year London med student here.

I would highly recommend you do something other than medicine related stuff the summer before med school. Trust me on that one. London is big enough, cool enough and with the best weather all year to spend it in some lab.

If you are going this summer it is going to be super busy. Don't forget about the Olympics!

Go sightseeing! No, really!

The United Kingdom is huge, and has some gorgeous things you can see. Even if it's just going for daytrips with the train to Kent, Sussex, etc. There is a reason that Kent is called the Garden of England...
Even take the Eurostar for a daytrip to Paris for example. Stay one or two days on the mainland in Europe.

If you insist on doing medically related stuff, you might have more chance of helping if you contact a GP clinic just outside London, or become a carer that goes to people's houses and helps them washed and getting dressed and stuff. Is hard work but very satisfying!

Thanks, I am kind of leaning towards the "sightseeing" thing now, maybe with a small volunteer gig. I've spent enough time building my resume, and completely lost the past 2 summers to school, and then MCAT studying/work/applications. Yuck!

Have fun. It might be the last free summer you ever get. Cheers,
M
PS: And London is a fantastic city to spend some time in. Do some trips to the areas around there, and look into cheap flights into places like Dublin and Paris as well. You can catch an early flight and daytrip Dublin, or stay in a hostel for a few nights on the cheap.

Yes, this is great advice. The great thing about the UK is the budget airlines, you can literally pick up tickets for tens of pounds.
