    math major in the HIzzo!
landed 5 interviews (FLorida, South Florida, Chicago-Pritzker, Pittsburgh, Georgetown)
no acceptances yet, but I KNOW it's not cuz of the major.

yes, I was asked about it, and I gave such an abstract answer, I think I threw off or confused a couple interviewers. Make sure non-math people understand your answer :)

Don't ever think, or let anyone tell you, that you cannot get in because you are a math major. Just as long as you take the courses required and do well in all of your classes, you will be fine. You do, of course, need a reason for wanting to study medicine. I would think that they would like math majors b/c they have the ability to think critically.
I had someone tell me that because I am "only" a BA in biology that I was NEVER going to get into medical school. I still haven't seen her around school, but I can't wait to see her so I can tell her that I got in!!! (I once had hopes to double in art and biology.... yeah, it never happened)
    You are gonna be fine!

Applied Math here. You should have an idea about why you chose your major and how it might apply to medicine, as I was asked that several times...

i just want to thank you guys for all of the posts :D

oh, did anyone take program in computing classes, like c++, java, perl...
do those count on the BCPM or AO?

    thanks

Even if you're taking a CS class on the positronic brain, it all goes into AO. :D

Clinical stuff for me was very minimal...volunteering at a long-term care facility, shadowing various doctors over several months, EMT for some pipeline survey crews.

I did research in atmospheric physics for a few years as a physics graduate student.

I worked as a nurse's aide for close to three years. Didn't do much research except for my thesis.

Do electrical engineering classes (which require a lot of math) count as BCPM? In general can classes that have an element of one of these four count in that category? IE: Heat transfer, mechanics, etc. ? I'm not a math major sorry, engineering.

Sorry, but they do not count. There is actually an engineering designation for them. Here is the link to the <a href="http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/2003instructionbook.pdf" target="_blank">instruction manual.</a>

    hope you don't mind, but just to brag <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" />
according to the mcat examinee data for the Apr/Aug 2001 MCAT: math majors scored better than all other majors in each section. the only exception is that one other major, humanities majors, scored 0.5 better than math on verbal (as they should).
