I was wondering if anyone has applied to UNM and if so, what your numbers (GPA and MCAT) were? I will be applying next year and wanted to get an idea of where I stand. Thanks!

I'm not a New Mexican....more like an old Mexican. I am 24 with a cum. MCAT of 12.5.....not the greatest score, but not too bad. My premed advisor told me that my MCAT would actually help me at some schools because 12.5 is a unique score.

Good luck!!!

Hi Hershey: I go to UNM and I already applied. There's actually no cutoff for your gpa/mcat scores as far as I know. the admission process seems to be very misterious here. I got a 3.4 and a 9/9/9 on the mcat. Nothing great I know.

hope that helps.

KidA, let me know what schools you get into with a 12.5 MCAT score..i got a 19 and think im hopeless now. but good luck.

Hey Vietcong: Come on man, Kid A is just screwing around. What med school would take an overall score of 12 on the MCAT? He's just BS'ing. Obviously he doesn't even know the way is graded cuz there's no decimal scoring. It's all whole numbers so where does his 12.5 come from?

Hi Oscar505, thanks for replying, I didn't think anyone (who's serious) would. Have you been admitted? Did you apply Early Decision?

Hey man....don't diss a 12.5 MCAT score! That's definitely uncalled for! The reason I said I have a 12.5 is because I took the test twice and averaged the two scores (12 and 13). Get it? I may not be the smartest ... but I'm not gonna let that stop me. It's all about heart baby ... don't let the system hold you down.

Everyone who's still waiting ... keep the hope. Hell yeah!

Hey Hershey: I have yet to hear from UNM. I did not apply early decision because I took the MCAT in August. Most fo the people I know who have gotten in, did it through early decision. that seems to be the best and more likely way to get in because less than 100 people apply and they take about 30 or so. During regular admissions they choose the remainder to fill a class of 73 but obviously there's more people applying so your chances are actually 1 out of 8. Do you live in ABQ? You said you got an interview at U. of Washington in 1999, how come you didn't apply to UNM? I assume that if you got an interview at U Wash your chances to get into UNM maybe even better. How did your interview with the office of multicultural affairs go up there?
Let me know

Oscar

Hi Oscar,
When I interviewed at U of W, I was a California resident. That's why I didn't apply to UNM. Since then we have moved to Farmington and since now I'm a resident, or will be shortly, I'd like to try it at least one more time. My interview at the Multicultural Affairs office came as quite a surprise to me. I had no idea about it. Just before my interview in the morning I was told I had another "interview" scheduled right after my interview in the Multicultural Affairs office. It was definately much more relaxed, I really didn't think anything of it. The girl with whom I spoke to was very nice and interested in me and my interests. It was definately more casual. During the interview I basically asked what this was about and she said that those who say they are interested in Native American health issues in their application get to talk with the office to see what opportunities are available to them. How did you know that I had this interview? It was my understanding that not everyone has it. When is your interview scheduled? Good Luck!! Will you be interviewing anywhere else? If you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask!

Hey Hershey: Well I spoke with the people from the OMCA and they say that all out-of-state applicants except for MD/PhD are scheduled to interview with them. This is because they want people who are interested in working with underserved populations. I will be speaking with this guy named Charlie Garcia. I am still reading up on health care issues which I know will come up during the interview. Are you native american? Anyhow, I'll let you know how it goes and whether I make it into U Wash/UNM or not.

I am scheduled in seattle for March 9. Two weeks from today.

Well thanks for the clarification. No I am not native american, but I did study anthropology as an undergrad and am interested in issues concerning other cultures. You'll be a lot more prepared for this interview than I was when I went. I had no idea what to expect, except I think I knew about the 3 member panel. I didn't even know about interviewfeedback.com until I saw it in the papers they gave out... and it was my first interview. So try to be relaxed and you'll do fine. It really wasn't that bad. Just be cognizant of the fact that you might need to defend and elaborate on your answers. Being aware that they use this strategy, for whatever purposes, will hopefully enable you look at it as something other than a personal attack. Are you native american? Also, I'm not sure if you've already stated this elsewhere, but have you interviewed at UNM or been invited? Have a great day!

Well everyone that applies to UNM and is a New Mexico resident gets an interview so there's no way to tell whether you are competitive or not. No I am not native american. I am actually from Central America (El Salvador). So when you apply to UNM, you will get an interview regardless. They also have what we call "spoon-fed" admissions. Every year they choose 7 rejected applicants whom they feel are potentially good applicants and put them in this post-bac program where they make you take upper division science classes (i.e, immunology, biochemistry) and then after you complete the courses that they tell you(24 credits total--12 credit hours per semester)and get a B or better, take the MCAT and then you are guaranteed admission to the med school. Kinda of a backdoor to get in. The catch is that you have to be pre-selected by the admissions committee.

Does the medical school at UNM screen secondaries for out-of-staters, or do all applicants get them? If I should be expecting one, what kind of things will they ask? Essays?

At least as of 1999, all non-resident applicants to UNM must apply through EDP. There is a very strong preference for NM residents and those from western states supported by WICHE. Former NM residents are given some consideration.
For the class entering in 1999, UNM had over 100 EDP applicants and accepted over 42 of them, the highest number of applicants and acceptances in the ED program's history.

I am an out of state resident who applied through the wiche program, I am from Montana. UNM screens out of state applicants applications. I have recieved a secondary and an interview for September 6. My stats are GPA 3.9, MCat of 27, I went to a Montana college.
