Hello there!

I just recently graduated from dental school and am currently doing an AEGD residency. With just a few more months before I am done, I am trying to decide on what to do next. Somehow, I am really intrigued by the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. The reasons being:
1. It is not hard on the body in terms of stress and strain on muscles/joints, etc
2. It seems that it can be conducive to a flexible schedule. I know some medical radiologists can work from home. Is that possible in OMR?
3. It seems like you can work from anywhere and provide nighthawk reads.
4. It seems like a very interesting and stimulating field...
5. If it can be used as a supplement to a normal practice, it seems like it would be great.

I understand that most positions are academic, but is there anyone out there who knows of someone who works in a private practice setting? Can someone please shed some light on the prospects of this field. Is it worth spending 2-3 more years doing? And if anyone has done it before, is there a way to also get some clinical experience while doing the residency so that you don't lose those clinical skills that we all struggled so much to acquire through dental school?

Any input would greatly be useful!

Thanks in advance!

Let me put it this way. If you are a practicing dentist or dental specialist would you ever send a radiograph somewhere to be interpreted? Almost no one would do that. This is why it is really an academic position. Any medical doctor having a CT, MRI, ceph, etc. ordered will have it read by the attending radiologist. So I don't see how you could set up a practice like this.

In real life you maybe do some research, teach dental students basic theory behind radiographs, and maybe oversee a radiograph clinic at the dental school. It's pretty boring.
