Any other incoming M1s feel like they've forgotten everything?

I took a gap year after college, and am starting M1 soon. I saw something "science-y" the other day by chance (something about amino acids, can't remember, no I wasn't pre-studying) and realized I have forgotten most of my biochemistry, genetics, immuno, etc.

Anybody else that feels/has felt this way? Or does it all just come back to you the first two weeks?

Don't worry about forgetting undergrad material. You'll learn whatever you need in medical school. Congrats on getting in!

Doesn't matter. There are 50 year olds in med school. I'd venture to guess they've been out of college for more than just one year.

One of my Facebook friends recently made a post about how she's re-learning all of the amino acids in preparation for the first day of medical school. Oh, sweet summer child...

In all seriousness, you will learn everything you need to know and it will be fine. There will be people in your class who haven't been in school in multiple years. Good luck!

I only have one important piece of advice here...

Make sure you never forget about the circuits you learned about in physics. You never know when your hospital will suffer a power outage, and you will be required to fix the system!

Other than that, it's a whole different ball game. I was non-traditional with a nearly non-existent science background, and did just fine. Good luck and enjoy yourself!

After talking to other med students I feel like we will manage through-- just enjoy the remaining time you have before classes start!

It was also really nice to see some of my struggling friends finally be able pull solidly passing grades after nearly a year of questioning their worth and intelligence.....

You aint just whistling Dixie. Soooooooo many, tooooooo many quality medical students fall into this abyss.

Beware the questioning of self worth and intelligence. Going to medical school and then training thereafter have broken many good souls. It shouldn't be that way

OP: There are plenty of non-science majors in medical schools and they do well.

I was a psych major with philosophy minor. Some of the first few weeks can be discouraging, yet by the end if MS1, I feel confident against my hard science major colleagues. Remember to work on your performance. Don't judge yourself against others.

If you got high enough on your mcat to get into medical school, then I suspect you probably know or knew enough background science to survive the first few weeks of medical school. Either way work hard the moment you start medical school and you'll be fine./

You don't need to be a genius or frankly even smart to do well in medical school. Just put in the time.
