Any questions regarding fist year @ UCSF?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey shendo
thanks for offering, I pm-ed you.

Hello shendo
I pm-ed you too
thanks
🙂

Where do most people outside of university housing live? Within how many blocks is an ok distance to be walking to school and after how many blocks will we want to be taking the bus or N-Judah? How crowded does the gym usually get? Thanks!

Hey Luminous_1,

you could definitely get into UCSF with only 3 yrs of undergraduate. I am currently a D1 at UCSF and there are 3 classmates of mine who are doing that. 2 of them got their BS degree in 3 years and the other one will be granted
a BS degree in dental sciences when we graduate dental school.

However, I must admit that it is much more difficult getting in with 3years of undergrad under your belt since you probably have to take numerous classes all at once. Enjoy your years in undergrad!

Good luck!

Who's the nice prof. Who's the one to be aware of?

How strict is ucsf on plagiarism policy? I hope they kick out all cheaters. Before those *****s go on and cheat somewhere else or kill someone in their hands.

Thanks

I agree Tink,
Dental school cheaters, wife beaters, car stealers, drug dealers,
lunatics with meat cleavers... they all bad mofos. Personally, I wouldnt worry about them cause at the dental/medical school level, they've perfected their craft & will never get caught. All the amateurs got caught in undergrad. These are the "crem de le crem" cheaters were dealing with. I would rather plug in to the social pipeline that will lead me to old exams. That's a good question, how do you penetrate the underground old exam library?

Desi,

All us Penn kids are golden.........GIDDY UP!

Shootin'😀

Penn kids,

There are always one rotten apple in the barrel. Watch out in your exam, and you will find one "creme de la creme", "cream of the crop" who makes it to penn, or ucsf. Sure enough there will be at least one.

When do UCSF Students take the NDBE I?

what do you think of "Stanford Fencer?" 😀 😛 😍

We take the Boards part 1 after our second year.

hi guys...

i decided to check out the good old SDN forum after a long hiatus. this is still as great of a resource as it was about a year ago, if not better~ 😀

just wanted to say "hi" to the UCSF D1's (very soon to be D2's!! :hardy: <--that is the party hat that i will don when we finish our physio final) who's azarene80? could you be one of our NY'ers? 😉

i'll try to answer any questions that ppl may have about UCSF as well.

housing: the majority of us don't have student housing. in terms of where ppl live--there is such a broad range, from walnut creek to 3rd & parnassus (lucky!). i think the best way to look for housing is to check out the ucsf housing lists and match that with a map of sf. make a bunch of appts to view apts on one day and walk around to get a feel of how far is far for you. the map can be deceiving because one block at a 45 degree incline will be much more of an obstacle than 5 flat blocks to keep you from those 8am classes! 😉 it's all subjective...in terms of N-Judah, 25 blocks away is roughly equivalent to a 15 min muni ride.

profs: you will LOVE the entire anatomy staff 😍 they can really "liven" things up 😉

Thanks, Wasabi. It's great to see you here again. Regarding biochem and anatomy, what texts do they use?

Anatomy:

Required Moore, Keith L. and Dalley, Arthur F. Clinically Oriented Anatomy, 4th edition, Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, Baltimore, 1999.
Required Moore, Keith L. The Developing Human, Clinically Oriented Embryology, 6th edition, W.B. Saunders Company, Philadelphia, PA, 1998.
Atlas

Required Netter, Frank H. Atlas of Human Anatomy, 2nd edition, Novartis, East Hanover, New Jersey, 1997.
Optional Agur, Anne MR. Grant's Atlas, 10th edition, Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, Baltimore, 1999.
Dissector

Required (D1 only) Sauerland, Eberhardt K. Grant's Dissector, 12th edition, Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, Baltimore, 1999.

Biochem: no book necessary--everything you need to know is in the syllabus.

hey wasabi, thanks for the info
did you try to test out of histo or biochem, if yes how difficult were the exams, were they multiple choice?
any feed back on this topic will be highly appreciated, thanks in advance
good luck and have a great summer,
P.

i tried to test out of biochem but not histo because i had never taken histo before. these waiver tests are offered during prefall. biochem had 2 parts--first part wasn't too bad, the majority of the class passed out of it. however, the second part of biochem was tougher--only 1 or 2 ppl passed out of part 2. i don't have any input on the histo waiver because i didn't attempt to take it.

i HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend that you take the time/effort to study for and waive out of the biochem & histo classes...you will breeze through fall and winter quarters if you do (not to mention you'll be the envy of all your classmates)...and if not, well...heh heh....better pitch your tent at the library...cuz it will be your home away from home fall quarter...good luck!

-wasabi

forgot to mention that biochem waiver was multiple choice--you can actually check out old tests from the library reserves to practice from...once you get your student id...

Hello future D1's

Congratulations and welcome to UCSF!

Just want to let you know that passing out of biochem lowers your workload plenty and taking the time to pass it is worth your time.

It isn't overly difficult and more than half the class pass out of the first quarter of biochem. Also, there is the option of getting a letter grade for the exam. You can choose to take the letter grade or opt for the Pass grade instead.

There are two exams given for biochem....one for fall quarter and another for winter quarter (both are 35 questions each). The material covered during winter quarter is a little more difficult than fall quarter.

If anybody is interested in getting a hold of a copy of the syllabus for Fall and Winter Quarter of Biochem and a copy of the Old Exams (very helpful), please contact me.... (I will probably be able to get the material to you once my finals are over....which is approximately a little over two weeks).

Good luck everyone and again congrats.

Don't forget to enjoy your summer!

Yup, wasabi is right. If you have to take all those classes, you will have to rent a place in the library and stay permanently in there. And all you will see (if weather permits) is the GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE. That's one of the reason I gave the school the nick name GOLDEN GATE DENTAL.

Azarene, thanks for offering the tests. I pmed you.
