Hi,

I am a single mom about to start residency in internal med.
I am both excited and a little bit scared.
Anybody in the same situation?
Do you have any advice?
Thanks!

I have completed medical school, internal medicine internship, and two years of psychiatry residency as a single (widowed) mother of three. Some advice: 1. Have a back-up system for caring for your children if you are late at work (which happens a lot), 2. Establish a regular time to telephone your children from work (do this from a private place), and schedule regular family activities on your days off - consistency lets the children know they can count on you, and 3. Maintain a professional demeanor at work at all times, including keeping family concerns strictly out of the work environment - you don't want coworkers or supervisors worrying about whether you can do the job.
